The True Meaning of "ROOTS"
This miniseries is one of two that is a must for my library. The story is extremely well written. When I watched it in 1976, I, along with most of America were in a completely different place mentally. After watching it on TV ONE in 2007, I now understand Alex Haley's title ROOTS. While most people automatically connect with the racial tensions during the time period that ROOTS covered (slavery in America), my second viewing of ROOTS, 30 years later, was a revelation of the true meaning of the title "ROOTS". Though the story is about slavery in America, there is so much more to the story. The story of seven generations that trace their roots back to the Mother Land and held on to a basic connection to their heritage. 30 years later, I was able to receive the determination of a man to never disconnect himself from who he really is. There were many bitter and sweet moments in the movie but they were real moments in American History. It was a revelation of the triumphs and defeats for both the Black and White races in this depiction of Slavery in America. The 2007 narrated version was extremely helpful for setting the tone for what one was about to witness. This is a must see miniseries and I can not wait for the DVD to be released in May 2007. When my son is old enough to comprehend, this is one DVD that I will be sure he watches. Excellent writing and acting!

Everyone Should See It
I was a young child when this aired originally, but I've never seen it until now. So far I've only watched the first DVD, but I will make time each week to finish the whole series. I've always known Levar Burton was in it, but wow, he was so young! Of course I remember him from Reading Rainbow and then later on Star Trek, the Next Generation. But to my surprise, there were so many other stars - John Amos, Cicely Tyson, a very young Maya Angelou, Lou Gossett... oh my goodness, even celebrities that I haven't seen yet but I read about in the cast list like Robert Reed and Sandy Duncan, plus so many more. I had no idea they were in Roots. Now for the subject matter, it is hard to watch at times, but it is part of our history. Just watching the first DVD, I cried a few times. I don't think I will ever understand how anyone in history, no matter how long ago, could ever think that was ok. It is definitely a very ugly part of our history, but something that we should not forget about, just like the Holocaust. I agree with another reviewer in that it should be shown in school, but I could see that causing problems - meaning with acquiring parental permission due to the nudity (although natural) and of course the violence portrayed. One last thing, as far as my set of DVD's, at one part the sound was not timed properly with the way their mouths moved, but it didn't last too long. Maybe my DVD was defective. If I have anything else to add after I finish the whole series, I'll repost.

The miniseries is brilliant with great acting by a great cast! Of course I cried when Kunta Kinte was captured by the slave owners and brought to America along with other Africans; I haven't seen the miniseries since I was a child and my mother made me watch 'ROOTS' which was very controversial in 1977. Actors LeVar Burton, John Amos, Louis Gossett, Jr. and Ed Asner were absolutely outstanding as Kunta Kinte, Fiddler and Captain Davies, respectively; actresses Olivia Cole, Madge Sinclair, Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou were also outstanding in their respective roles. I loved the ending when the slaves were free and they all settled in the state of Tennessee; I also liked the making/behind the scenes of 'ROOTS' as well as author Alex Haley discussing his roots by listening to his ancestors talking about the history of slavery and where they came from. As a Jamaican woman I, too, would like to know my roots: perhaps I am a descendant of Africa? REST IN POWER to the following actors and actresses: author Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (August 11, 1921-February 10, 1992); Dr. Maya Angelou (nee Margeurite Annie Johnson) (April 4, 1928-May 28, 2014); Mr. Edward Asner (November 15, 1929-August 29, 2021); Mr. Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Jr. (January 15, 1913-March 10, 1998); Mr. Edward Macdonald Carey (March 15, 1913-March 21, 1994); Ms. Olivia Carlena Cole (November 26, 1942-January 19, 2018); Mr. Gary Ennis Collins (April 30, 1938-October 13, 2012); Mr. Kevin Joseph Aloysius 'Chuck' Connors (April 10, 1921-November 10, 1992); Mr. Scatman Crothers (ne Benjamin Sherman Crothers) (May 23, 1910-November 22, 1986); Mr. Ji-Tu Cumbuka (March 4, 1940-July 4, 2017); Mr. Brad Davis (ne Robert Creel Davis) (November 6, 1949-September 8, 1991); Mr. Lorne Hyman Greene (OC) (February 12, 1915-September 11, 1987); Mr. Moses Gunn (October 2, 1929-December 16, 1993); Mr. Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909-April 14, 1995); Ms. Carolyn Sue Jones (April 28, 1930-August 3, 1983); Mr. Douglas Osborne McClure (May 11, 1935-February 5, 1995); Mr. Victor Morrow (February 14, 1929-July 23, 1982); Mr. Thalmus Rasulala (ne Jack Crowder) (November 15, 1939-October 9, 1991); Mr. Robert Reed (ne John Robert Rietz, Jr.) (October 19, 1932-May 12, 1992); Mr. Harry Rhodes (April 10, 1932-January 15, 1992); Mr. Raymond St. Jacques (March 1, 1930-August 27, 1990); Ms. Madge Dorita Walters Sinclair (April 28, 1938-December 20, 1995); Ms. Cicely Louise Tyson (December 18, 1924-January 28, 2021); Mr. Ralph Waite (June 22, 1928-February 13, 2014); Ms. Lillian Randolph (nee Castello Randolph) (December 14, 1898 (1914?)
