Works well.
Works as described. The set as purchased is very handy. It does require a bit of effort to hook the leads, write it all down, route the wires, then take the drive, repeating as needed. But if you have to find the source of a noise, this is really the best way. The headphone earpieces swivel around to face outward so you can hold one earpiece up to your ear and hear without having to actually wear the headphones. For those of you not sure about these things: I used to work at new car dealerships as a mechanic. This is one of the tools we used. I do remember some leads not working after a while. I'm not sure if it's abuse or quality that caused maybe two out of six to stop working after a while (a year or two). So many different people used the set. That was over a decade ago. I had no concerns ordering a new Chassis Ear for myself due to this potential issue. All six are equally loud and clear on my new, personal set. I tested them all initially by hooking them to the back of a quartz clock to check sound quality before going through the effort of hooking them up to a vehicle and routing the wires the first time. Loud, clear tick-tick-tick from each as the seconds ticked past on the clock. Nice. I used to use these using a cassette adaptor instead of the headphones, playing the output through the cars stereo. Worked great like that. I don't have that option on my truck. I was able to hook the individual microphone leads directly to my Olympus WS-300M (yeah it's old) digital voice recorder using a mono to stereo 3.5 mm adaptor so I could drive legally and listen to the recordings at home (I could actually also listen live using ear buds hooked to the Olympus if I wanted). I did the same drive 6 times, switching the lead hooked to the recorder each drive. Not as useful, as you can only do one channel at a time, but nice to know you can do it. To be clear, the 6-channel control box and headphones that come with the set work great. My alternate configurations come from me wanting to test drive alone. Headphones are a no-no for drivers here. A word about cell phones: another reviewer mentioned interference from his. Boy was he right! While testing my setup in the truck, I would occasionally hear a specific computer type noise pattern. The pattern would repeat every few minutes. Remembering the reviewers comments, I took my phone and moved it closer to the Chassis Ear control box and it about hurt me ears it got so loud. My Motorola Android definitely caused unwanted interference with my Chassis Ear. No biggie, just be aware. More than two feet apart and no trouble.

Good, old school NVH tool
Great diagnostic tool. Wired would seem a little old school, but it comes with Velcro straps to hold wires away from hot or moving components and you don’t have the worry of losing the wireless sensors or worry with batteries leaking and damaging them.

If you order chassis ear and it doesn't work check the battery. New battery was dead.
Chassis ear works good. I first got it and it would not work. I almost returned it. I decided to check the 9 volt battery that came with Chassis Ear for voltage, and it only showed 5 volts on multi meter. I bought a new battery from a local store, installed it, and it worked. So if you buy Steelman Chassis Ear that don't work replace the battery that came with it for a new 1 from your local store. I used this to find a drive line vibration. It helped me narrow it down to the transmission. I put 3 mics on the transmission, one at the differential pinion, and one on each side of the differential carrier bearings. I could hear abnormal noise at the transmission output shaft. Engine noise will be heard when mikes are clipped to the transmission. I put the car on wooden blocks, ratchet strapped the car to D-ring anchors that i install to the shop floor. Took the tires off, and ran the car up to high way speeds. It enabled me to rule out differential as the problem. Differential bearings were smooth, and quiet. Transmission was loud and abnormal. It is hard to tell about the transmission noise as the car is cammed with long tube headers so a lot of engine noise transmits through the transmission. Now I have to figure out if its a transmission issue or a drive shaft to transmission angle issue. This tool helped me narrow it down to transmission or driveshaft to transmission.

Nice...but.. The case cuts my fingers and is way too difficult to close.
I loved the idea of this product. I choose it as a Christmas gift for myself from my parents to diagnose a tire roar sound in my dad's truck. Alas, no good deed goes unpunished. I was able to isolate the noise to it coming from the rear wheels or axle. I moved the clamps on the rear left and right side and now one side is loud when it was silent and the silent side is now loud. So I was going to return it but I read that I would be possibly be charged the returned shipping and 15% restocking fee if it was unopened despite the guarantee of satisfaction. The case is impossibly cheap and impossible to close unless you sit on it. I cut my finger on the case's sharp plastic locking latch and it hurts my fingers to close with the sharp closing latch even with gloves because of the shock it sends through them. I told my mom for something that cost a $100 they couldn't spend another 15 cents for a better case. It will stay on my shelf useless as I am not wanting to feel the pain of using the tool or I find or buy a better case for it. Either way I have not been able to isolate the noise so I'm rating the item i received 2.5 stars. Everything I received was new. I was so excited to finaly have it! I feel it a shame it will just collect dust now.

Use this tool in my professional shop. Great for finding those difficult drivetrain noises. I have used the wireless design but prefer the wired model due to the better audio.

These are the best on the market. The wired ones are the most reliable

It was noise from bearing but i did not know which side. I connected ears and in 3 minutes found source of noise. Very helpful for diagnostic suspension. Clear sounds.
