Perfect for testing a CAT-6A cable!
Recently I ran about 125' worth of new CAT-6A cable for my business' credit card system, underground, within PVC piping. It was so much fun (not really) pulling the cable through, and even as gentle and careful as i could be, and as you could be, you can never tell if there is a "flaw" of some nature within the length of cable you've just laid out. This is where this gadget comes into play; once you run your cabling, before you "close up things", after you've installed the "ends" onto your cabling, you want to make sure all the bundled-wires are intact and are all firing as they are supposed to. This cable tester is perfect for it, and I'm very grateful that this was available and at the price it is. You can always 'check' your cabling from time-to-time to make sure all the wires are working appropriately, keeping this product in your arsenal of "cool toys to keep" is essential if you're a computer geek like me. I have no issues with this thing; it's easy to use, reasonable price, and if you keep it in a place where it won't get beat up when it's not in use, you're in good shape for future use! :)

Super Cheap, Works as Advertised
It's a piece of Chinese junk alright, but it does what it's supposed to do, which makes it a great value if you don't run or troubleshoot network cable every day.

Worked Great (until I accidentally damaged it)
As handy as I often think I am around ethernet cabling, I was finding a few errors in cables and connections I was making. This tool makes it super easy to see the errors in my crimping ways. It's survived over a year of my casual use, and performed perfectly. Easy, fast, visual. Miss a connection? It shows it. Conductors crossed? No way to miss that. Value for the very low price? Awesome. But I messed up. I was terminating an open pair of cables for security cameras, and had my cable sniffer connected to the camera end while I sniffed in the patch panel to ID the cabinet end of the same cable. Found the corresponding end, and plugged this tool into the socket Before Disconnecting The Cable Tracer At The Other End. Mistake!!The tracer injects a low-level tone into the center two conductors in the connector, meaning 4 and 5 in the 8-pin RJ45. That was enough to cause conductors 4 and 5 to no longer indicate continuity through the tester. But I didn't know it, and carefully re-terminated the end of the cable. Same result as before. Hmmm... On a hunch I plugged the two test tool pieces together with a known-good ethernet patch cable, and again both 4 an 5 failed to show continuity. Apparently I killed 4 and 5.Moral of the story: This is a great handy simple and inexpensive ethernet cable tester. Just be absolutely sure that both ends are completely open before you plug them in to test.I looked inside the source unit and couldn't see anything that looked remotely like its smoke had leaked out, so no opportunity to try a field repair. Looks like I'm going to spring another $10 or so for a replacement. I will scavenge my still-good 9V battery from the old unit to use in its replacement. Small consolation... sniffleNew one is just a few clicks away, and thanks for the very low-cost lesson. :)

Works well
This is a simple and cheap device that works well to tell you if you have your network or phone cable wired right. This is a DC only tester. So it will not tell you inductance, capacitance or AC leakage. But for most people DC is the most important. To use the device, it splits in two and you take the small remote end and hook it to one end and the master unit to the other. The when you turn on the master switch (requires a 9V battery) it starts counting down. You need to then look at the remote to make sure it is counting in the correct order and not missing any lights. It will test both RJ-45 and RJ-6 cable.

Good job for the price.
This can save you the frustration of making up a cable and it does not work because one wire may not be seated properly or you reversed a pair. It lets you know if all wires are connected securely and in the right order. Easy to use and set up. One caution: Make absolutely sure the cable under test is not connected to the network or damage to this unit will result. (both ends unplugged before using the test unit. The new pass through RJ45 plugs are a lifesaver.

Works for simple verification
Used to confirm all the cat 5e I installed in my house. Does not provide tons of data for trouble shooting, but if connections are good it shows you that. Once I knew the connections were good, I knew to look elsewhere when making connections. nice, helpful cheap piece of gear.

Works Great
Found the wire I wanted to trace inside a wall right away. I know I will be able to use it when working on other projects. My unit did not include the 9V batteries. Yes the plastic seems cheap. But the nice case will protect it unless you are very sloppy. The instructions are poor, but I figured out how to use it without reading the instructions.

Lasted 10 minutes
Even before I get to my review, I must say that the unit looks and feels very cheap. When I first got the unit, lights 3 and 4 on the main unit didn't work. I tested on several patch cables that I know are in working order. I honestly could work with this as the remote unit worked in correct sequence, so I could give it a shot. I have two 100 foot runs that I needed to test. Got through the first one. When I went to check the second run, the main unit wouldn't even turn back on. I even switched out the 9V battery twice to brand new batteries. Neither worked.I would not recommend this product at all. Pay a little extra and get some quality.
