Hasbro wants Marvel Legends 80 Years line to be their all-out swing-for-the-fence take on the prominent Marvel characters. By all appearances they've succeeded. Iron Man is one of the first figures listed, one of the first to appear at retail, and thus far, he's one of the standouts. These figures are priced a bit more than usual, and they offer SLIGHTLY more than usual. But does it justify a $10 price-point increase? I'd say...........no. 80 years Iron Man, as an example, is a nice figure. Great paint apps, great sculpt, very good articulation, and some good accessories. But there's nothing else about this figure to justify the price jump from about $30CDN to $40CDN. The biggest flaw with this sub-line is the asking price....these are gussied-up Marvel Legends, and really that's ALL they are "celebrating" here. Now, the figure........I did a side-by-side comparison with the ToyBiz Wave 1 Iron Man--from the very first wave. The new figure shares the same mark armor as the original, the classic Mark 4 suit--from the comics. There's a gap of 18 years between the two figures....one being the first wave, the latest being something in the wave 40's, I'd guess....and the evolution of the toy-line shows. The new figure is sleeker, less clunky in design and has heroic proportions. The sculpt carefully accentuates the components of the suit, and the anatomy of the character. There's considerable refinement here, not just an adherence to Alex Ross' artwork....there's an overall matching to the IDEAL Iron Man look. Coupled with the advancements in toy design over the past 18 years, the mechanics of the figure also show advancement. Sure, Hasbro did this look early on when they took over Marvel Legends, but the flaw with that toy was that the proportions were off, as there's no way a human could have fit into that suit. The original ToyBiz sculpt did take that into consideration, and this 80 years rendition does as well. Paint is a nice rich candy-apple red and a lustrous gold. This is the real Alex Ross influence at play, as the comic look of the character was often stuck with the 64 colour palette for about the first 20 years of its history. By the time Ross's work came into vogue, printing processes in comics allowed for a vastly broader range of colour choices--enough so that gold tones could be properly rendered. The articulation is less than on the very first ToyBiz figure, but admittedly that figure had all kinds of unnecessary articulation points. The only really weak point on the 80 Years figure here is the hips, as the circular power pods on each hip partially restrict the side-splay of the legs at that point. You get a thigh-cut AND a boot/calf-cut swivel, ad well as the other standard POAs for Marve Legends. The figure comes with a second helmet head with a semblance of a nose sculpted on the face plate, as well as a uncovered Tony Stark head. The later is very nicely done. There's 2 sets of hands, a pair of fists, and a pair of left/right open hands for firing repulsor blasts. These hands have no pivot joint at the wrist, they just plug in and rotate--the pivot is a missed feature and would have plussed this figure. The fist hands DO have the wrist pivot. There are TWO sets of effects pieces, which can be used separately or together. A wider blast effect can fit in the boot or the palm, and a smaller blast effect can as well, BUT the small effects p[arts can also plug into the larger ones to create a more dynamic powerful look. These pieces have the standard pegs to them, and can be used with other figures that can accommodate such effects. This is a very good figure, one of the best Iron Man figures Hasbro has ever done. Where it places in your own hierarchy is, of course, up to you.
