ROLA (59912) J Style Kayak Carrier Roof Rack

I bought two of these ROLA carriers for two kayaks we have. The quality and workmanship seem to be very good. I have not used the carriers yet since kayak season here has ended for most part. I usually throw kayaks in back of pickup for quick trips but this is for a rack I can take in and out of bed in truck for camping trips. This allows me to fit my two kayaks and a canoe on the rack and be able to use the bed of my truck for camping equipment.I did put the carriers onto the rack though to see how they would fit, to check for any quality issues or other unforeseen concerns. I placed the kayaks on the carriers along with my canoe on its carrier (another brand) and all fit great. The ROLA carrier attached well to the rack for my truck and it is a square bar that fits Thule attachments though I own no Thule products. The ROLA carriers attached easily and fit very well onto this rack and should work great for my needs. My only concerns are the padding and how long they will last with wear, but again, seem to be of good quality and the straps being tough to use due to being a straight cut instead of angled as others have mentioned.Before buying these carriers, I had only one kayak and used pipe foam wrap which you use for winter and it provided great protection and worked well if I layed the kayak flat. With two kayaks I needed actual carriers and really wanted to go with the brand of my canoe carrier but it was quite a bit higher priced than the ROLA, so I checked out ratings like everyone else does on Amazon and the ROLA were ranked at about the same as the other brand. I did not want to go too cheap and lose quality but I also did not want to spend an arm and a leg. The ROLA is a nice middle ground price point and quality. I give it 4 stars since I have not used them yet but out of the box, I had no issues. The carriers were undamaged and packed very well. All parts and pieces were there and attached to the rack very snug which I will be using. Overall, seems to be a great product and hope to get many years of use.

I bought two sets of these to put on my aftermarket Tacoma roof rack for hauling our kayaks. I have been impressed with the quality and how well they have held up to our numerous trips out with the kayaks.However, they are pretty hard to screw onto the bottom. The nut is not attached to the knob and just lays in the channel. When you go to unscrew the knob the nut will fall out after it is loose and possibly scratch the top of your car. I'm aware of this now and hold my hand underneath but it is annoying.The other thing is that they are made for rounded roof bars. My aftermarket roof rack has bars that are square so sometimes if I do not tighten them down really well they will shift ever so slightly. Luckily the shifting doesn't seem to cause any major issues but it is irritating and would have me nervous on farther drives. We live 15 minutes from the lake so it hasn't been an issue really.The only other minor issue is the straps it comes with have the spring on the underside so when you go to slide the strap end through the buckle it sometimes gets caught and doesn't want to go. I do not have this issue on the name brand straps or the off brand ones I bought from Amazon a while back. It only is with these Rola ones. I have learned a way to finesse it in, but I should have to.The only other tip I have is to measure from your roof to your garage door to make sure you will fit with these on. If you don't fit, you might consider purchasing the fold down kind. I did not want to pay more than double the price for the fold down kind but I kind of regret that now. I park in the garage and have to take these off after every trip or park outside if we are going multiple days in a row.Overall, these have performed really well and with a few tweaks could be a 5 star item. However, their minor annoyances that could be avoided have me giving it a 4 star rating.

I needed either a stacker rack or pair of J-racks to load my various kayaks on the roof. 2 sets of these completed the task perfectly. At this time I have used them with my perception Carolina 14.5, my Dagger Mamba, and WaveSport ACE; needless to say they have the ability, like most J- racks, to haul just about any boat.Although these are optimized for use on aerobar racks such as Thule and the new Yakima crossbars, I had zero issues mounting them on a round-bar style cross bar. Like all rack attachments they take a minute to get in the ideal position, however these are much easier to mount than the yakima variety. Another plus is unlike other kayak attachments all the components to this rack are metal, and will last as well as allow you to really crank it down to your crossbars. The hardware is ideal for after factory rack systems, I can see some people with low profile racks may have some issues, but that would be the case with any kayak rack you try to mount.Some previous reviews complained about difficulty loading boats on to these, and honestly I had no issues loading any of my kayaks on my Silverado, If your buying any kayak roof rack be prepared to lift your boat on the roof I had zero issues loading any of my kayaks single handed.I also did not have any worries about my boats security on the freeway traveling 80+ I had zero issues and did NOT secure the bow or stern lines to the front or rear of my truck.

Met all my expectations. Purchased two sets for two kayaks. The kayaks fit perfectly into the carriers, the foam pads protects the kayaks and the straps with buckles work well. The buckles also have a rubber cover that protects the kayak and vehicle roof. Paint finish is good and looks like will last a long time. Installation on my factory roof carriers was quick with the large hand knobs provided. Great product at an excellent price from Amazon.

Works well and fastens securely to roof racks.
