A Timeless Classic
A great movie, music and songs, storyline and a great fighter Jet, the F-14. Newer jets may have better performance, but they lack the appeal of the F-14 for me anyway. A film to watch that never bores.

A Classic ’80s Action Movie
Tony Scott’s 1986 film, “Top Gun,” is a fun action movie that follows F-14A Tomcat pilots at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (later re-named Fighter Tactics Instructor program) at Miramar, CA, dubbed TOPGUN. Scott based the film on a screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., who adapted an article Ehud Yonay wrote for California Magazine in 1983 titled “Top Guns.” The film follows in the tradition of Tom Wolfe’s book and Philip Kaufman’s movie, “The Right Stuff,” though without as much meditation on the nature of the “right stuff” and its downsides. The film stars Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Kelly McGillis as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Val Kilmer as Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Anthony Edwards as Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Tom Skerritt as CDR Mike “Viper Metcalf, Michael Ironside as Lt. CDR Rick “Jester” Heatherly, Tim Robbins as Lt. JG Sam “Merlin” Wells, Clarence Gilyard as Lt. JG Marcus “Sundown” Williams, and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw. The overall plot of “Top Gun” blends elements of 1980s action films with the plot structure of a sports movie, including use of montages and a rivalry between Maverick and Iceman. Interestingly, there is no trophy at TOPGUN as it’s a training school, but that wouldn’t make for as engaging a film without some form of conflict. Also, several of the actions throughout the film would have turned the Cold War hot had they happened in real life. Otherwise, the aerial footage is brilliant, using actual Navy planes in carefully choreographed flights. Paired with Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and Harold Faltermeyer’s soundtrack, the result is a high-octane spectacle. The film’s legacy included the television series “JAG” (and, by extension, the “NCIS” spinoffs). In fact, early in the production of “JAG,” the television studio re-used much of the stock footage from “Top Gun” as it was still some of the best footage over a decade later. Even elements of Maverick’s backstory influenced that of Harmon Rabb in “JAG.” Further, a “Top Gun” sequel is due later this year, so this is a great way to add the original to your home movie collection.

Your Neighbors will call the cops!!!
Excellent!!!! Since its an "ULTRA 4K Blu-Ray" Disc I recommend you use an Xbox Series X to run it. I ran it through my ARC Home Theater and it replicated a movie theater experience. If you get an error message don't panic. Re-boot your console and insert the disc again. It worked for me. When you start the disc it will give you a lot of disclaimers on the screen so be patient. Then the home screen finally starts up. -Top Gun (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital) Re-Mastered Up- 4k -Sony Bravia 85" 4K Ultra LED -Sony BRAVIA Theater System 6, 5.1ch Home Theater System (w/ Dolby ATMOS) (Not true 4k because the movie was formatted differently at its time but they remastered and upscaled it to 4k and it still looks amazing.) Original Format: Top Gun was shot on 35mm film, specifically using Kodak's 5247 and 5394 film stocks, to achieve its iconic look, with cinematographers using polarizers and filming at higher frame rates (32fps) for dramatic effect. In the 90's most movies were liked this and gave it a more cinematic look that connected the viewer. Not like today's crappy Netflix formats. All Hi-Def digital streaming that seems fake with CGI. I started buying 4K UHD + Blu-ray discs because it shows higher pure digital content than streaming bandwidth content. I only bought movies I like. The Hi-Def sound quality it absolutely pristine. I recommend you buy the latest releases because the original formats are in today's standards. If you get the Sony BRAVIA Theater System 6, 5.1ch Home Theater System (w/ Dolby ATMOS), most latest movie Discs titles have the Dolby ATMOS format so you are good to go. My Next title will be Top Gun Maverick.

Great Audio
An absolute must have for those who have a home theater. From the score to the incredible dolby atmos, the audio shines. Despite having dolby atmos, some movies do not always deliver on the experience. I found dolby atmos to be quite active--particularly in the aerial scenes. And, the soundtrack is a classic. The mix on this 4K disc is outstanding, comes through crystal clear and fills the room. LFE is good. It does not go Godzilla: King of Monsters low. Nor did it seem like my subwoofer was getting a Blade Runner 2049 kind of workout. But, LFE was good. Although this is 4k HDR format, the video quality was not especially sharp. Lots of pretty soft scenes--particularly the aerial scenes. The video quality is not horrible. It is about what I would expect for this release. As for the story itself, it is 80s through and through. If you have already seen this, you know what you are in for. If you have not yet seen it, it is silly and corny. But, lots of fun with some heart. I highly recommend this movie for those that just want a good, fun, weekend watch. Again, for the audio alone, if you have built yourself a decent home theater, this is a must have.

Definitely different than the DVD.
Top Gun is still a great move even though it was produced in the 80’s. It might seem like a dated move, however the fighter combat Tactics have not changed. The aerial visuals Action in the film is among the best capture to date. The look and feel of the then and still high performance F-14, with its great photogenic qualities; look better than Tom Cruise. Aside from the action in this film, the friendship, and love story are not bad for a movie of this type. The talent of the actors helps to bring this part of the move to light. It’s a great movie and probably will become a classic in the mean time it’s a great film to watch over and over. Now for the technical aspect of the movie, First of just running it through a Blu-ray player and running it through a true home theater do make some differences as well as running it trough different brands of Blu-Ray players Starting with sound if you just pop it into a Blu-ray player and us the TV speaks the sound is all right. Ran it through Yamaha home theater and the sound improved. I’m sure it is true for other brands as well. The standard edition DVD and even a VHS copy lets loose with crushing bass that can be felt as much as heard through an older 5.1 w/subwoofer system. If you jack the sound all the way up you can feel the general sounds of an F-14 carrier take off and flight. The sound technicians could have done a better job for this release. The problems start coming up when you go to Blu-ray 3D, some scenes are grainy especially the opening scene on the carrier flight deck as well as low light sequences, this is regardless of Flat screens TV used. The most graininess was on my Seki TV, which is my cheapest flat screen in the house. Final thoughts if you have the DVD the 3D Blu-ray is not worth getting!
