I need to find a balance in preventing theft of product and limiting consumer packaging frustration. How much effort is needed to break one seal?

Clamshell packaging is an anti-theft mechanism itself. Even though it's a lot harder to shoplift what's encased in plastic sheet, and even if you do, the number of items thief can pocket is significantly reduced. But shoplifters still try. Retail theft or shoplifting prevention can be a big problem. So to add a extra weld or two might give owners some relief. To balance out consumer frustration with clamshell, you really just need one good weld rather than several okay welds. Test out your sealer at HI temp and try a few materials to get that good weld and stick to the setting for your production run.

Will this glue two pieces of polyethilene tarp?

For polyethylene tarp, you can use the low temperature setting to get started. When the jaws are pressed down, it will press the tarp and melt them together to form a nice serrated weld. You will probably need to weld in multiple places to for a nice stitch line to really bond well. The trick is to balance out the time and temperature. Essentially this tool is originally used to bond plastic clamshell package and as long as they are plastic, the sealer seems to work very well. Hi, what's the max thickness this can seal?

Andrew, thank you for asking this great question. To be honest, I were not even sure what the answer is. But I have taped a Q&A session Youtube video and you can search "clamshell sealer" from Youtube. SO from my experiment, I am able to achieve a maximum thickness of 49 mil (0.049 in.). But this is not to say that the sky is the limit. I have observed some interesting physics behind achieving the "max". The temperature and the clamping time are two reversing factors to seal thick materials and the cooling is necessary to achieve stronger bond. On one side, you are tempting to use hi-temp to burn through materials and this is the "magma", which is the molten plastics in between the jaws by sealer heat; but it also quickly melts the peripheral plastics and pushes out "lava". the lava just as in reality (Hawaii i.e.) can burns out heat dissipation paths. The result of this magma-lava effect is the material fallout or a sinkhole formed afterward. I want to do a followup video on this magma-lava physics to further explain this physics.So my conclusion of this experiment is to seal thicker materials ( I am talking about 40 mil range), you have to use LO-temp setting to get started and control how much time you will need, the shorter the better. Also cooling is important for thicker plastics sealing/welding. So with this LO-temp approach, you slowly produce the heat necessary to melt the plastics but also allow heat to dissipate quickly so the seal is still intact once everything cools down.I hope this info from my experiment helps.
