Supernatural: Witch's Canyon: 2 : Mariotte, Jeff: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Supernatural - Witch's Canyon - I don't do books. I NEVER owned a book in my life, but my obsession with all things Supernatural led me to buy the only 3 published novels to go alongside the series. This is the first I have read - well I'm not quite at the end but so far it's not disappointing. Plenty of blood, guts and scares to rival any of the series episodes. A must for any true fan - sending our boys to the Grand Canyon, and becomming involved in a strange case of a town being attacked by all manner of ghostly old Indians, army soldiers and nasty shapeshifting beasties. Throw in a rampaging bear, a seriously unpleasant wolf, wildlife that claws your eyes out or swarms of insects that descend if you try to leave on one of the towns roads - a new shopping mall about to be opened, a deluded town Mayor and a 90 odd year old man helping the Winchesters, and you have the makings of a good story! My first of 3 books from the series - and I'm already hooked. Review: Fantastic creepy story - Absolutely love this book, one of my favourite books of the series. I've read this book over and over and keep coming back. Great combo of all story ingredients!

Winchester roadtrip: Visit scenic Arizona - and try not to get killed.
The second tie-in novel for Supernatural sees the Winchesters leaving the bustle of New York behind them and heading to a remote town in Arizona. This novel follows on directly from the events described in 'Supernatural: Nevermore' but apart from a brief mention in the introductory chapter of a character from the earlier novel, the two books aren't otherwise connected. Without giving away the plot, Sam and Dean are warned that the next bout of savage murders that takes place in a small town in Arizona every forty years is imminent, so the Winchester brothers head over there intending to deal with whatever is responsible. They arrive in time for the first death, and as the body count grows day by day, Sam and Dean are left trying to figure out who or what is doing the killing and how to stop it. Overall I enjoyed this novel. It was an easy read with a plot that moved along at a good pace. My one criticism would be that after all the build up, the ending seemed rushed and a little abrupt. The characterisation of Sam and Dean was, for the most part, true to how they appear in the series. One of the strengths of the book was the dialogue, especially that between the brothers, which was convincing enough in most places that it didn't take much imagination to hear the actors' voices speaking the words. A bonus on the characterisation front was a couple of brief flashbacks to the brothers' childhood that filled in a bit of background. Supporting characters, even those that would soon contribute to the body count, were described enough that they were more than just ciphers. As far as tv tie-in novels go, I'd categorise this as one of the better ones.

そして釣られる素直な弟) Combination of snow mountains and Supernatural. After reading the book, actually I departed for Grand Canyon.

While not quite as compelling as it’s predecessor Nevermore, Witch’s Canyon is still an enjoyable romp. Two and a half stars.

I've recently become a convert of the show Supernatural, and have watched the complete series twice within the last two months. Even this has not been enough to satisfy my addiction, and I've turned to the books to help tide me over for when I can't watch the Winchester boys onscreen. The first novel, written by Keith R.A. Decandido, was alright, and I soon moved on to the second, the subject of this review. I've since read the third, also by Decandido, skipped the fourth (it's not even about Sam and Dean but about Samuel and John), again by Decandido, and am now just starting the fifth (by Joe Schrieber). Of the five books, I most wholeheartedly and unreservedly recommend Witch's Canyon by Jeff Mariotte. He gets Sam and Dean exactly right. His portrayal of their personalities, their interactions, their routines - all flawless. Reading the book, it FEELS like an episode of the show, right down to the description of Baby's rumbling growl, their skeezy motel room, the generics of small town America, and Dean's ceaseless flirting. There's also the plot of this book to recommend it. It is unpredictable, and had me guessing to the end. It has moments that are downright scary, which is of course what any fan of Supernatural really wants. Scary and sexy and family and funny, all in the right amounts, and Mariotte nails it bang on. Fans of Supernatural- buy this book! Don't waste your time on Decandido. He does ok, but Mariotte is a master, and reading books 1, 3, and 4 will only disappoint you. Mariotte understands and imbues his story with that certain Supernatural /je ne sais quoi/ that Decandido does not. Leave the others and feast on Witch's Canyon. You will love it; I absolutely guarantee it.
