A truly wonderful album
If you like female vocalists and good instrumentals, you will love this album. Amanda's voice is a beautiful instrument and the songs really show it off. The instrumental cuts are also very good. If you have a good system, this will sound great and you will certainly appreciate what Sheffield has done with this material.I used to have this as a record album in the '80's and loved it then. I have since gone digital, and I no longer have a turntable or records. The record sounded better, but this CD is probably as good as digital can sound. Unless you only like hard rock or rap, I can't imagine anyone not loving this.

Great album with my favorite recording of "The Rose".
A great recording in which the audio quality is great, but not superior to the vinyl pressing. Worth every penny.

Hot-and-Cold
Since this has always been a hot-and-cold album for me, my review is as well. McBroom’s vocals and writing were beyond exquisite and since Mayorga arranged her songs, I certainly can’t fault him there, but most of his instrumentals came off as little more than filler to me on an already very short album (even for 1979). His love affair with harmonicas was also a minus. One flaw, present throughout, was the sound levels. The studio clearly had the input levels set too low when they recorded it, because the listener has to compensate with a much higher than usual volume setting. All that being said, I’ve always been so in love with the five McBroom songs (always preferred her take on her own “Rose” to Midler’s.) that I can’t give this anything less than a “4.” But I almost always skip the instrumentals.

Excellent Recording
I got the original vinyl of this back in the early 1980s and it blew everything else in my collection away in terms of sound quality. That was 1980 and in some ways the technology has vastly improved, but I cant say it is being used any better than this. The vocals were perfectly recorded because she sounds like she is actually in the same room on a good system (The piano quite a bit less so). For best realism I prefer an analog source and this is good enough to make the hair stand up on my back. I believe this was recorded in one sitting, per side, which adds to the performance in my opinion. There is a tiny bit of noise reduction "pumping" going on with the CD version but you really have to listen for it. Otherwise it sounds like they didn't mess with it too much, so the CD is worth a listen.
