Westalee DesignJanet Collins Ruler Quilt Design Book

I have several sets of Westalee rulers. I wanted this book because I think this would be a great self teacher and practice guide. A good way to get use to using your rulers.

I had Westalee rulers sitting in my closet for 2 years. I watched a video and this book was mentioned so I bought it. It is very helpful and I am using the book and rulers now. I am so excited by what I am able to do.

Helps to have something in hand to look at when you are struggling to figure out what you want to put on a quilt but when you turn a page and see something you like it gives you ideas and helps

If you’re thinking about purchasing this for help with designing the quilting, this isn’t the book. The book is easy to read. Mine arrived in a zippered plastic bag that I will store it in because the covers aren’t the best quality. I believe only one or two blocks have you turning back pages to get instructions. Those blocks are what she calls free, so you can come up with your own design.I must say I enjoyed how the author spoke in her writing. She didn’t appear to assume the reader knew basics. She didn’t talk down but she wasn’t the high falouting quilt police either. She strongly suggested watching a video by Leoni West on tension, I did and it was excellent. The tension info is in Sew Steady’s education in the blog section.As another mentioned YouTube and Facebook have great videos featuring the templates needed for this book. I’m going to follow some Facebook advice and draw out my designs on paper.

This book had some interesting ideas, but I don’t feel it was worth $25.00. I would consider myself experienced in ruler quilting and didn’t find ideas enlightening. Perhaps a beginner would find it useful, however you can access Westalee on YouTube and learn far more than this book had to offer for free.
