VH31 Quartz movement is Better
I returned the SNK381 because I thought it was defective. I didn't know it needed to be shaken to bring it alive.1. Instructions were not included.2. I learned I don't desire automatic movements. That said, if instructions were sent along with it, I most likely would have kept it, . For geeks an automatic movement can't be replaced, however, if you are not a geek and need a serious tool watch take a look elsewhere. I gave it five stars because it's a high quality watch for those who desire looking at mechanical movements and dealing with its antics.

Classic Seiko 5 goodness, with MACV-SOG vibes
Eighteen millimeters. Let's put that right up front, because there's bad info all over the net about this model for some reason. The lug width is 18mm. The strap/bracelet width to order is 18mm. Eighteen. Not 17, not 20, eighteen. 18. Eight, followed by teen. Get a 10mm strap, then stretch it 8mm wider. So this is a Seiko 5. So much has been written and said about these watches. It's all correct, except as noted above regarding the lug width. The lume is excellent, the dial is very, very easy to read, and I wish they'd upgrade the movement to have the features the NH35 has. Hacking is good. It makes it easier to set the watch accurately, although a bit of back pressure on this watch's crown accomplishes about the same thing. And handwinding is even gooder. That's my biggest complaint about the Seiko watches with this movement. If you have one watch and wear this all the time, it's not an issue, but if you have many and switch them out not being able to handwind is annoying. You don't know how much time you have left before it winds down, and the only way to wind it is to shake it, to wear it and be active. And that winds the mainspring a lot slower, less effectively than movements that can handwind. Okay, enough about that. The framed day/date window is a nice touch, especially at such a low price. The case is nice and slim, with comfortable contours and good finishing. The crown is too small. It's not the easiest crown to use. I won't use the phrase "change it if I could," because I can. But I don't want to, because the way it is it homages, it mimics the 1960s Seikos that were worn by some incredibly tough men fighting for others' freedom. It was a military issue item. Those are collectors items now. This is very, very similar to those watches; I can see it. The tiny crown means it sits very flush, so it won't snag. It won't dig into your wrist. It's safe and out of the way. So it stays. As you can see, I immediately swapped the steel bracelet for a NATO strap. I like the clasp on the bracelet. The end links integrate very well with the rest of the bracelet. That's about it. The overall design is too busy for my taste. Varying widths, varying finishes, and as you can see in one of the photos, it doesn't even move smoothly enough. You can see one of the links hanging up and sticking above the others. It shouldn't do that. But maybe they know how many people are immediately going to remove it and replace it with nylon or rubber. I don't know. I also don't know why they don't offer it with a nylon, military looking strap. Not a big deal.If you think you'd like this, and you understand the handwinding gripes, go for it.To SSG Walter Ferguson, Jr., still unaccounted for, we remember you and your MIA brothers, and those who returned from defending freedom to continue your lives. Thank you for your service.

does not work - do not buy
Notice the name is misspelled. This "watch" is not authentic. The model number DOES NOT EXIST on the official website. It cost over one hundred and thirty dollars, worked only five months with constant readjusting, and then died. No product support, return impossible after two months. WARNING!!! do not buy!

Nice Lumed Numerals and Matte Dial
Among several Seiko 5s I have, I like this dial the most because it doesn't reflect light back. The matte dial enhances legibility. Not to mention that the dial feels less cluttered than for example the popular SNK809. But the handset isn't the best when it comes to legibility--if only it was paired with the same "all-white" handset found in the SNKN25 (or the older SNX809). But it still is probably the best choice among Seiko 5 'field-watch' options because the SNKN25 dial just has lumed "pips" (numerals are not lumed unlike with the SNK381), the SNX809 has a case that is polished everywhere and is paired with a white day-date that "swallows" the white hands (the hands gets "lost" when they go over the day-date), and the SNK809 isn't really a "field-watch" (as opposed to the SNX809 which is). As Seiko 5 watches go, this is a good one. And the item I received works well out of the box.

My Very First Seiko & Automatic Watch✨
The media could not be loaded. Hands down the best watch I've ever owned! This is a watch inspired by the older “MACV-SOG” version used by the special Vietnam soldiers in WW2. I love its history behind it and it feels amazing on the wrist. Some people complained about the bracelet it comes with but i love the way it looks and feels with the original bracelet. I have changed the bracelet to a Nato Strap every once and a while but always go back to using its original. Its lume is AMAZING its so bright and easy to read at night which really surprised me.(in the video you can see it) i have now started a watch collection thanks to this watch and have fell down the rabbit hole of buying many watches but this one is by far my favorite one. I highly recommend you getting this watch before it sells out since they are no longer producing this model meaning once it sells out everywhere you wont be able to get it and the price will increase with time. Do yourself a favor and get it while you still can you wont regret it!Ps. Thank you to every single Veteran/Soldier for their service! 🫡

Meh
I own a few Seiko watches including automatics, and love this style of this watch. It was just way too small. I do think I have a larger wrist, as I typically enjoy 42 or 43 mm cases. This seemed very small on my wrist. Also the bracelet is extremely cheap. I was already planning on replacing it with a leather strap, which is weird too considering it uses a 20 mm strap which in my experience is small, obviously this is related to case diameter. Attractive watch, could pass for a war masculine watch on a woman's wrist or perfect for guys with a smaller wrists. Do wish it was available closer to 42 or 43 mm.
