Practical English Usage, 4th Edition Paperback: Michael Swan's guide to problems in English

If you study English, buy this book whatever your current level is (though it may seem a bit difficult for a beginner).Perhaps this is the only book you will ever need. If you have a friend who studies English, this would be a striking gift.Pros:- the book is beautifully designed in terms of publishing (overall quality, fonts, colors, etc.) and in terms of its structure (it is really well-thought-out);- the first part of the book comprehensively deals with grammar rules and usage;- the second part is devoted to vocabulary usage (for example, here you can find the explanations like: the difference in usage between "to begin" and "to start", "to end" and "to finish", "cloth" and "clothes", "classic" and "classical", "also", "as well" and "too", etc.).Cons:- honestly, I couldn't come up with a single shortcoming.

The British Council recommended this book (along with a few others) as a helpful resource for the CELTA course, so I purchased it and one other textbook. And honestly, this book is so much better! It surpassed my expectations. It is compact, yet helpful and full of useful information that otherwise would have been a pain to Google search for. There’s a helpful index at the back of the book, which I am making extensive use of for my pre-course task. Not to mention, the language is clear and concise. This is exactly what I needed.With all of that said, this is more of a reference for learning new information. This is NOT the book for you if all you’re looking for is some practice exercises, there aren’t any in this book.

this is a great reference for English learner. this is not like any other regular grammar book. Literally, it is practical in everyday life. highly recommended. hopefully, I can improve my English grammatical skill through this book

My book was delivered in impeccable condition which I am very happy about. I am in the process of getting my online TEFL certification and after doing a lot of research on the best books/materials for ESL instructors (at any experience level), this one was perhaps the most highly recommended/mentioned resource.

I was very pleased that the book arrived in perfect condition. It was in an envelope, then securely inside a box, and then the book itself sealed in plastic. Having received other new books from other sellers with a corner slightly bent or some other minor flaw, I was really impressed at how the seller protected the book. I would not hesitate to purchase another book from this seller tabletopart again. Thank you!

I bought a "new" book but it doesn't look like new. Anyways, I am not going to return it because I am not interested in the cover or the form but the content. Maybe was the delivery 🤷🏽‍♀️.I’M VERY EXCITED to learn more about grammar and everywhere I found this recommendation, so I bought it right away and I can’t wait to improve my English with this tool. So far, the content looks good.Thanks.

Overall this was a good purchase! The book is very detailed and has a lot of examples. I was disappointed however to see that this book had stains on the bottom (despite being in plastic and considered 'new' by Amazon.) Considering I paid $40 for this, I would expect it to be in perfect condition. This is the reason I knocked off two stars.

PRACTICAL ENGLISH USAGE - Fully revised international edition- Michael SwanWhat I liked in this book:1. Differences between British and American English -I found it in this book and not in the latest version of Wren & Martin book. The old version of Wren & Martin book published by S.Chand around 2004 had this content but now this specific content is removed in the latest Wren & Martin book. Don't know why did the publishers removed it.2. The book clarifies how to construct the correct sentence.3. Everything in grammar is included in this book.Suggestions for improvement:1. Too much textual matter. The sub-topics begin with a small letter. The black and white text looks boring. It can be enhanced with some blue or red text.2. No pictures, just plain boring text.3. No proper highlighted heading.4. Practice examples with answers were not given.5. As far as this is concerned, I preferred using Advanced English Grammar by Martin Hewings because it has visuals, common grammatical mistakes people make and assessment questions with answers.Overall, not a bad book at all! This is long regarded as the Bible for english learning from both the learning and teaching point of view. Such organized and aptly referenced this book is, that one could easily depend on it for their verious fact finding or knowledge building or doubt clearing purposes. This is a combined usage guide and learner's grammar intended mainly for advanced students of English as a foreign or second language. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to polish or upgrade his language skill.

I bought this book while studying for my TEFL qualification and found it incredibly useful. It fits very well with the course and provides a lot of examples and information, I haven't quite got through all of it yet! Really handy tool for learning and revising English grammar and language.

Redoing my. Tefl qualification as its 20 years old- this book is fantastic. Well worth tje money. Huge detail, technical- great for tefl teachers etc.

32 years ago, my friend’s mom used this book to teach english in the UK. the second edition was just published at that time. now many years later i got a new one, carrying on the passion for english to go further!
