ICON: Hermann Prey: A Life In Song

What a wonderful collection of Hermann Prey's career! He was always my favroite "Figaro" and "Papageno" in years past and I still have tapes of these opera performances. They are a bit worn and don't show any of todays digistal qualities, yet I still enjoy them just the same. Finding this 10-disc set on Amazon was truly a surprise as recordings like these are very hard to find anymore. The remastered songs and arias are clear and sound beautiful on my Bose. I have been enjoying most of the set since I received it a few weeks ago, from the Lieder Cycles to the folk songs and arias. I still have a couple of discs I haven't listened to yet but I'm sure I will love them just as much. We have preactically no more Video and Music stores in our area except for Walmart, who sells the run of the mill of todays recordings. So I always turn to Amazon when I get nostalgic for some old recordings and 95% of the time, I find what I'm looking for. Another plus - the prices are always excellent and, as in this case, surprisingly cheap! Great quality at very little cost. Thanks, Amazon!BTW - this set is beautifully packaged, with each selection listed on the individual sleeves. A true treasure and keepsake!

This 10 cd is fairly evenly divided between lieder and arias. While CD 1 contains 46 minutes of Schubert lieder and CD 2 aWinterreise, Volume 2 of Prey's Philips Lied Edition contains six 6ds of Schubert, including 49 lieder with texts by various authors,lieder written by Goethe and Schiller, and the three major cycles. The Philips box is currently difficult to locate. For those whoadmire Prey, these sets are treasurable. I find that he exhibits great range and a daunting variety of dramatic skills fromlight comedy to deep tragedy. Disc #8 includes Mozart arias including a contribution from the heavenly Erika Koth (trythe Prey/Koth la ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni). Prey and Koth also sing a duet from the Barber of Seville. Some non-Germanarias and songs include works by Rossini, Bizet, Leoncavallo, Tchaikovsky, Loewe, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers. Prey appearsat home in all of these venues. Of course one must enjoy the voice itself, but I do and consider Prey a great artist as well.

This CD set (containing 10 disks) presents an outstanding overview of the multifaceted talents of Hermann Prey. This collection represents an excellent bargain for such a wealth of songs interpreted by a truly great singer. Highly recommended!

A wonderful collection from a great singer, worth the price for the Winterreise alone. Always a joy to remember that DFD was not the only great baritone of the latter part of last century. The lieder are lively and nuanced and the recording quality the best of its time.

これまで、EMIのプライのセット（輸入盤）ものには、シューマン歌曲が入っていませんでした。14年前追悼盤で、日本発売された時も、シューマンが無く、今回初めてでしょうか。30代のプライが歌った「詩人の恋」や「リーダークライスト　OP39」「同　OP35]は、LPで愛聴していましたが、CD化されるのを待っていました。若き日のプライは、高い「ラ」の音も、バリトンの音質のまま歌っており、聴いていていて圧巻です（「詩人の恋」〜第７曲　恨まない〜）プライファンで、30代のシューマンが聞きたい人は必見です。ただ、以前のセットものとかなりの部分（シューベルト、ベートーベン、レーヴェ、などなど）重なっています。私はどうしても、シューマンが欲しくて、購入しました。

ドイツリートやドイツ民謡などたっぷり収録している。ヘルマン・プライの若くて力のある年代の声が堪能出来る。オペラも収録されているがイタリア語ではなくドイツ語で聞くのも意外と面白い！モーツアルトのドンジョバンニのドイツ語版は楽しかった。
