paper with spirit
Paper has a spirit. Samuel Beckett came right on to it.I wanted to add some details about this paper. Yes, it is a very thin paper, that is a beauty of it, it responsive, it reacts to every slight pressure or touch and it produces the nuances of ink's vitality. You cannot run it through the press, it is the paper that records your breathing. There is no better paper I tried that can "hear" the breathing of the brush. Rough gestures can tear it, but if one practices on it, even strong brush strokes are possible, but you need to start from the air and end in the air. You do not dig into it. If there are challenges to pain on this paper, they are for mastering the connection of all four treasures: brush, ink stick, ink stone, paper. Good luck.

This xuan paper purchase was to compliment my recent purchases of black and colored ink sticks. The seller had recommended that I try this paper and offered it at a discount so I can try it and share my thoughts. I am by no means a professional calligraphy or artist, but I have experimented with traditional watercolor as well as Sumi-e painting for some time now.I had never used traditional Xuan paper in the past and even when I was taught calligraphy in school as a child, it was on something that was likely a mass produced booklet. I really had no idea what to expected but was quite excited to try out some paper that was made in the traditional way. When I received the paper in the mail, it was in a yellow tube with printed words that were in the form of written Chinese calligraphy and something that looks like a stamped signature in red (printed of course). There is a bit of a hand-made feel to the tube, whether that is true or not. There were Chinese words along the length of the tube, all the way around, giving the feel of a scroll. When I opened the tube, there is pleasant scent of the paper that I can’t quite put into words well. Upon further inspection of the paper against a darker background, you can see the translucency and a pattern on the paper where the paper is more transparent than the rest. I would say that the transparency is probably similar to tracing paper. To sate my curiosity, I looked up how this paper is made and quickly realize just exactly in the paper-making process the lines had come from.I had read that there are 2 types of Xuan paper, one with sizing that you can fuss with that is meant for detail work, the second without sizing, is for more loss or spontaneous work. As soon as you put your brush to the paper the ink soaks into the paper. You can see mistakes and hesitation so you are meant to jump into it and let your inspiration take the painting. The thinness of the paper and the quick absorbing nature essentially records accurately your every move (even hesitation and mistakes), the firmness of your strokes and you have to approach this painting with confidence and work with your mistakes rather than trying to fix them.I really enjoyed the experience experimenting with this paper to paint and have numerous craft ideas as well.

Enjoyed using this paper.
It's a pleasure to write a painting on this paper, the description of the seller is accurate, the hand made paper is of good quality, it's thin but a good challenge for beginners or professionals. My order arrived on time.
