Audio-Technica AT-LH11H Aluminum Headshell, ATLH11H

If you're buying this headshell, this is likely not your first rodeo with such a thing. I bought it because it's designed for use with cartridges that have threaded mounts, as with Audio-Technica's own VM95 and OC9 series. If I got the image right, you can see that I used it for a VM95C. Also, I dread the job of aligning phono cartridges. This headshell is similar to A-T's MG-10 headshell in that it doesn't use a pair of slots, but rather two defined mounting points. On the MG-10, there are four threaded points. Again, if the second image is good, you can see them. I have two of MG-10s, one with a Sumiko Pearl, the other with a Black Pearl. I was very fortunate that, per the alignment/overhang tool supplied with my SL-1200 MkII, they are in perfect alignment, and only require an occasional check to insure the mounting screws are tight. It's about the same with the LH11H shell, but there is a little play between the supplied mounting screws, and the holes into which they fit. Be sure, as your tightening them, that your cartridge is properly parallel to the sides/front of the headshell before final tightening. The forwardmost set of holes will likely be the ones that you need to use. The biggest problem I had with mounting the cartridge was dressing the connecting wires. I found it was preferable to attach the wires to the cartridge BEFORE mounting it. If you have a stylus guard, use it. Use a pair of tweezers to dress the wires. This takes time and patience. The wires are of high quality and easily bendable, but they have their limits. I wound up with several 180 degree turns, but all was well. Set the overhang and azimuth with whatever combination of tools and eyeballs you have available to you. I bought a VM95C/H with a lesser quality headshell provided. The AT-LH11H is miles ahead in quality of construction/materials and, most importantly, sound. It was a pain to work with, but it was worth it. I'll never need to align it again, and it sounds great.

Very nice pairing with the at-vm95ml. Lh11h headshell wiring is a tight fight when sizing for use with atlp120x. To get correct needle alignment I used the inner set of holes and slide wiring base inward till I had the correct placement. Dissapointed that there wasn't a paper alignment grid included with $100 headshell. Audio Technica website free alignment tool download does not work, so you will need an alignment tool if you don't have one already. Since I am using the Audio Technica auto stop, I had to re locate the auto stop base and sand down lifting arm to prevent the tone arm from getting stuck. Not sure why this happened side 1 was fine side 2 kept getting stuck on lifting arm.

If you have one of the upper-end AT Carts, this Headshell is essential to getting the very best performance out of it. I use this with the AT-OC9XML and it make a fantastic pairing. It's light weight for having the adjustments it has, and it properly supports the Cartridge making setup super easy. Note this headshell is designed to be used with the tonearm's mfg's recommended geometry. It has fixed mounting holes and only allows for over-hang adjustment. In other words, you can't put it on an older Technics toner and try to force Berwald geometry on it as it won't work...the cart can't be twisted. I use it on a Unitra GHS-630 who's tonearm conforms to Berwald so it's perfect!!!

This is my favorite headshell, although there are good ones that cost less. It seems to have been designed for the Audio-Technica OC9 series of cartridges and looks and performs great with my AT-OC9MXL. Highly recommended.
