Plugged it in, and it just worked.
That's all it took: plugged into a USB port, Windows 10 recognized the device.

Requires VLC Media Player software to play DVDs
Bought this external DVD/CD drive (HP USB External DVD RW Drive, New, model F6V97AAN) to go with a new HP desktop computer running Windows 11. That's because computers are sold without disk drives these days. But audiophiles like me prefer higher quality recordings on CDs and DVDs. Out of the box, this drive plays CDs perfectly--it is truly a plug-and-play CD player. BUT it requires third party software to play movies on DVD! No one tells you this, of course. I spent several hours trying to figure out how to get it to play a DVD movie. The drive would grind & grind and lock up my entire computer. I had to physically unplug the drive from my computer to get it to unlock and stop grinding. Once I installed my go-to media software, VLC Media Player, it worked fine. NOW it works fine with DVDs, but not before adding VLC. Save yourself the aggravation that I went through & download VLC *first* before you even plug in this drive. Then you're good to go.

Great product
I bought this for a trip as my laptop doesn’t have a installed DVD player. Despite this thing being flung like hell out of my bag in airport security it still works just fine!! 100% would recommend this item

Use caution
I was surprised at how lightweight it is and how fragile the tray felt. Having said that,I would use caution when pushing the tray in. I have seen similar comments on those made by other companies as well. There was no problem running it in Windows 11 and it recorded a cd with no issues.
