Not Extremely Sturdy, but an Excellent Solution, Nothing else like it in the Bed Rail Market
This will prevent falls, even for adults, in my OPINION, but it's not like a welded steel joint. But it's unique. Definitely worth the purchase. So i'm dedicating the rest of my review to some specs in case they're helpful to readers:The pre-drilled holes on the heavy duty L-Brackets line up perfectly with the attachment of the folding rail, if your' bed frame's wood slats are 4-13/16 inches apart, as mine are (does the "bed industry" have standardized slat spacing standards?). IF not, you may have to play around with the extra step of adapting a plywood shim to your slats and the shim to the L brackets.Be sure to order the 18" high folding rail, as opposed to the 14" high folding rail if your mattress is thick. (They do offer the choice of installing the included L-Brackets flipped upside down so that the short end of the "L" points upwards, but i don't recommend that as you loose some stability that way, and more stability is always good in a bed rail; They also offer a 5" L-Bracket (longer short leg of the "L" for $20 extra, if you want). The button side of the folding rail is the side to which the rail will fold down to, so leave room on your frame to fit the folding rail in the FOLDED position, when measuring. That's it.

Practical and Simple Bed Rail
As others have commented, this rail system is simple to use. I have 11inch mattress on a full bed and I went with a 37"x 18" unit. Turning the metal flange up gave me 3" + 18" rail = 21 inches of height. Less my 11" of mattress I have 10" of rail above the mattress surface. If I turned the 3" flange downward I would have 8" of rail above the mattress. I use a 12"x 24" 3/8 inch piece of sanded plywood. I had to find smaller screws than the ones provided to mount the plywood to the flange frame. I did not want a rail system that was exposed all the time. This one is push button like some doggie doors and retracts out of my way. I've gotten hurt falling out of bed and this rail prevents that. It was a reasonable price and and is made out of materials that are durable. I have used it for months.

effective, but installation isimportant
I bought this item to keep my ill wife (Alzheimer's) from falling/rolling out of bed at night. The instructions suggest supplementing the materials they provide with plywood panels that slip under the mattress. I did not do this. Installing panels would help deal with outward twisting stress applied to the top of the safety gate, but it does not solve the problem of the unit from sliding out from under the mattress should the person in bed push outward agains the gate near its bottom. To me it made much more sense to run some twine from the unit's under-mattress brackets (there are holes in the metal brackets) and attach to the bed frame on the side opposite the safety gate. THIS WORKED to keep the unit 100% in place -- resistant to any pushing or kicking. The unit appears to be heavy duty and is attractive.

Too low
I loved the bed rail. Thought it would solve my issue of falling out of bed. However, the size I ordered was only 14 inches tall. My NEW mattress was 10 inches tall. Obviously the rail did not stick up very high. I ended up rolling out of bed. I BENT the entire rail system and fell to the floor. I ordered the larger size which is 18 inches tall. (And longer also). This bed rail system is so easy to install and use. Even though the last set of rails did not work for me, I think part of the problem was it was too small. I got the larger set of rails and haven’t had any issues since.

Perfect for us!
My mother is very small and frail so there is no problem with damaging or moving the bedside rail when she moves or pulls on it. I didn't even screw the braces into the plywood under the mattress. In fact, by not screwing it in I was able to adjust more easily where I wanted the rail to be after I first put it on. The weight of the mattress and my tiny Mama are enough to keep the rail in place. This is a platform bed and it works perfectly. It folds up and down easily, the latch is easy to use, and it stores well below the 10 inch mattress plus pad as you can see in the photo. When pulled up it is 3-4 inches above the mattress. That is enough to keep her from falling out of the bed. The peace of mind is worth so much more than I paid for this.

This product is not very sturdy, I do not recommend it.
This product is not very sturdy, the Item did not keep my son from falling off the bed, the item came off the bed with my son and bent from the fall. My son suffers from seizures and fell on his back that he had surgery on the 5th of November for. his back still hurts from the fall.

Just what I needed
These rails were perfect. I had fallen out of bed a few times and having had five back surgeries a fall could be very serious. I cut two pieces of 1/4 inch plywood and attached the pieces with the screws provided. I used a power screwdriver. I think it would have been difficult with the little screwdriver provided. The rail works perfectly. It goes up with ease and is also easy to put down. When the bedspread is on and the rail down it is completely invisible. I did not want something that made it look like a hospital bed. I am so pleased with this purchase.
