Great book! I am a professional herpetologist and have been using it very extensively here in Belize for the past 3 months. The information provided is clear and understandable. The author, Julian Lee, really takes the time to let the reader know the most important info. Plates are in color and clear to see what species is presented. Multiple plates are provided for several species just so you can be sure of what you are seeing.

Great value and decent travel guide
This guide is a decent book to take to the Yucatan. It is a lot cheaper than the 1996 version - so if you lose it or mess it up in the wet Yucatan - buy another cheap! Also, this book is a lot better than J. Campbell's bookThis guide helped me find my main target in a limited time. Do your homework online before you go too!I would've enjoyed more photos though

Five Stars
Great guide to Yucatan reptiles.

scholarly textbook, but not a great field guide
A very scholarly textbook, and if that is what I was after, I would give it 5 stars. If you want to know the fine differences between snakes of the same genus, this is the book for you. But as a practical field guide for someone wanting to know and be able to recognize the difference between the very dangerous coral snake vs a similarly colored but harmless milk snake, it is not as good as I had hoped it would be.

Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya world
Julian C. Lee's field guide of the amphibians and reptiles of the Maya world is excellent. The color photographs make it easy to identify the animal in question; the maps give the reader the distribution of the form; the text gives a short synopsis of the characters and natural history of the taxon; the photos, line drawings, and the PRICE make it all worth while. Any person visiting the outback of the Yucatan Peninsula needs a copy of this book. All Nature Touring Companies should have it available for their clients. A wonderful addition for any professional herpetologist bookshelf.

Doesn't have photos of all the species, but it seems to have them of the more common species. The range maps and habitat info are very handy. I head to Mexico next week and feel confident I will be able to find many of my targets just by studying this book!

The best of what's available.
It's a good starting field guide for the area, and given the options available, the best of what's around. However, this is out of date, and lacking in many areas. The pictures are not great for identification. Useful until something new comes out, but best used with other resources.

Good starting point
I purchased this book for a trip I'm taking to Guatemala to survey reptiles out there. This book is the basics and there are more species in the area than this covers but this gives great instruction on identity if the species you are most likely to see. Good starter reference, not only ID wise but species information wise and quite easy to carry.
