Rogue Wave

I have no idea why Boyd Morrison has slipped through my reading net. I read a review of this book in the good Old Daily Mail - and bought it o the strength of this normally hard critic. Turned out to be a great find. It creeps into the thrilling zone with a minor seismic disturbance. Hardly a concern for the new Pacific Warning Centre's Kai Tanaka.....until an airliner en route from LA to Sydney vanishes in the same location - the plot begins to speed up as Nature's destructive force rushes on. The author has obviously done his research well. His characters are alive and you feel their fear with every page rushing to its climax. This is a great book. 津波パニックアクションサスペンス！！ 主人公は、ハワイのパシフィック津波警告センターに勤務する津波の専門家カイ タナカ。名前からもわかるように、日本人の血が流れてはいるが、それはとりあえずこの話には全く無関係。 彼の妻レイチェルはワイキキの大きなホテルのマネージャー。彼らには１３歳の一人娘ラニがいる。 カイは、専門家ですら想定外の、「あるなにか」が原因で（もちろん途中で解明されるが）、とてつもなく大きな津波がハワイを襲うことを分析する。彼は、あらゆる手段を講じて、いつものように多くの開放感あふれる観光客で賑わうワイキキのみならず、ハワイ全土に津波警告を発し、避難を促そうとするのだが、これが実際なかなか難しい。本気で避難しないどころか、津波を見物しようとしたり、サーフィンに出ようとするような輩がたくさんいる中、史上最大のメガ津波は刻々とハワイに迫っていた。そして、奮闘するＫａｉ、そしてやはり、ハワイの人の生命を救おうとする職務に忠実な責任感あふれる彼の妻レイチェル、たまたま出会った少年たちとカヌーで沖に漕ぎ出した娘のラニにも恐ろしい危機が迫っていた。 ＬＡからシドニーへ向かう飛行機が突如レーダーから消失したことから始まるこのノンストップアクションは、途中で読むのをやめることができないほどの凄まじいスピード感をもって進行する。 Ｋａｉの努力が空回りする様子はリアリティに満ちていて、よく理解できる。日本にもいるよね。台風の日にサーフィンしている人。 彼は、結局自身の仕事をぎりぎりまで遂行し、その後は家族を救う道を選ぶ。しかし、彼の家族は、それぞれ津波だけではなく、次から次へと切れ目のないアクシデントに襲われ、大変なことに！（この辺は読んでいて途中でちょっとぐったりしてきた程だ。） 津波の恐ろしさを描いた小説は、日本にも多々あるが、この作品は、やはりどこかハリウッドアクション映画風で、日本の作品（吉村昭作品とか）のような、津波が自身の身に迫るような恐ろしさを描いた本とは大分違う。 読んでいて、パニック映画全盛期の「ポセイドンアドベンチャー」とか「タワーリングインフェルノ」を思い出した。とにかくとても面白いし、ハワイを壊滅させていくメガ津波には、まさに圧倒されて絶望感をおぼえるほどだ。まあ、何もこんな人が死ななくても、と、娯楽作品ならではの不満も残ったが、とにかく、凄まじいジェットコースターサスペンスです。

really good read, really creative author

I love reading, and I'm usually reading a book on my Kindle (while working out), reading an actual book, and listening to a book on CD in my car all at once. It's rare that I find a book that makes me want to do nothing else but read that book. Rogue Wave was that type of book. This book grabbed my from page one and never let go. First off, I'll admit that the writing is not superb, but it's good enough. Some of the dialogue seemed a little contrived, and only a few characters were well fleshed out. But that's okay. This book is about a series of huge Tsunamis that are rolling towards Hawaii. The pacing of the writing is excellent. The action is non-stop, and I kept turning the pages looking for a good stopping point so I could get back to work or go to sleep. But there never was a good point to stop. I found myself reading even through the chapter breaks because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The author certainly did some research into Tsunamis. His descriptions of the massive waves and the destruction they caused were breathless and terrifying. Anyone who has seen the videos and photos of the Asian and Japan Tsunamis can appreciate what the author describes in this book. I finished this book in record time, and I'd read anything else by Boyd Morrison. If you're a fan of action, and I mean non-stop action, pick up this book now. But be warned, you'll have a very hard time putting it down.

There is nothing wrong with the book. Arrived in good condition and was not expensive. Sadly the powers that be keep issuing the same story under different titles and I did not spot it! So beware!!
