Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest: A Simple Guide to Common Mushrooms

A very nice pocket size, field guide.
Quality pictures for good identification, area specific, well layed out. With time of year specific to the upper Midwest, which gives you better accuracy of identification and more successful hunts. I'm very happy with this book, it goes with me on every hunt and often on hikes, when not actively looking a specific mushroom.

Great pictures but printing fine and gray
The pictures and write up in this book looks good. However the printing font is very fine, smallish and gray. My senior eyes cannot read it easily and I do not want to go mushroom picking with a book and a magnifying glass. I think I have to return it. Would blame this on the publishing company.

After sampling some (previously) unknown mushrooms, I am still alive, with no gastric upset.
I am now fully retired and have time to poke around the woods and yard looking for edible mushrooms so bought this guide to keep me away from non-edibles. This seems to be a pretty good guide, it is well organized and quite easy to use but I think more illustrations would be helpful. The guide does say that mushrooms can vary a great deal in appearance as they mature so that needs to be taken into account. If I'm not sure about something, if it's iffy, I don't eat it which is just good sense. Here in Michigan morel mushrooms are the big thing, and the only mushroom I could identify previously. Last week I found some oyster mushrooms and without this guide, I would never have dared to try them. They are great. Week before, I brought something home and it turns out they are not edible but if I wanted to dye some cloth they may have been handy. Last fall I tried mica caps and a puff ball, they are good too. So, this guide is helping me enjoy outdoor time more and, so far, keeping me safe from the nasty stuff
