How well do these hold up against carving into steel? Like for example if I wanted to add detail to a steel rod.

Hold up well. Better than I expected. I use them for finish work on guns.

The description says 1/8" shank, but the illustration shows 3 mm - which is it? (1/8" does not equal 3 mm. 1/8" = 3.2 mm.) Thanks!

The shank is 1/8th inch, I just pulled one out a measured it.

Are these good for shaping leather?

"Shaping leather"? Let's see, assuming you want to add texture or even holes to your leather, and you wanted to use drill bits, it seems like overkill to use these carbide bits, even a cheap set that can carve very hard materials at least until they wear out. I did a little net search and most references to drill bits and leather just used regular metal bits or hand tools. Careful when drilling through leather as you might start making holes in whatever is underneath. One neat trick showed leather sandwiched between plywood to hold it down, be accurate, save your fingers, and to protect your work surface. Hope this helps.
