Abe Lincoln's Hat: Step Into Reading 3 : Brenner, Martha, Cook, Donald: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Unforgettable Hat Story - I know Abe Lincoln always wore a hat, but I don't know he kept notes and papers in them until I read this book with my kids! One of the great reads from STEP INTO READING (STEP 2) books written for grades 1-3, ABE LINCOLN'S HAT has much to teach young history readers about America's 16th president. In this book, Abe Lincoln wore a smile and did not look serious at all. He was portrayed as a hard-working, people-friendly, visionary and brave leader. From a poor lad to a respected lawyer, he fought for justice on behalf of common people. When neighborhood children played tricks on him, he was not mad at all and even liked the joke. Abe Lincoln believed slavery was wrong and he tried to get elected into the US Senate so he could change laws. He lost the election to Stephen Douglas but became famous and when he ran for the president in 1860, it was a victory. He freed the slaves and helped unite the nation after a long war. My kids are deeply drawn into the biographic anecdotes and watercolor illustrations where they found the true story about Lincoln's hat very interesting (and unforgettable) and it successfully shows them through easy-to-read lines Lincoln as a great man and president. Review: This is a very good story and perfectly weittwr for younger kids. We read this book every other day

The Step into Reading books are well written and properly leveled for specific grades. Others try to do this, but often miss the mark. The story was engaging, the history was accurate, and my Grandchildren loved this book.

Since my Kindergartener (age five-and-a-half) had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me. These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Abe Lincoln's Hat", young readers are introduced to our 16th President. There is a lot of background information provided which makes for interesting reading, and it is pitched appropriately for young readers so as not to overwhelm them. The fact that Abe used his tall black hat to keep papers in is an interesting anecdote that had my little one giggling. I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to history, and I also came up with a series of short comprehension questions based on the story in this book so as to hone my daughter's comprehension skills (e.g. "Where did Abe live?", "What did Abe do with his hat?", "Describe the kind of person Abe was?").

My husband and I visited New Salem Village in Illinois and purchased a Lincoln top hat for our 8 year old grandson. I remembered my children having a book about Mr. Lincoln's Hat and thought it would make a perfect purchase to go with the hat. I found it on Amazon and it was a big hit! The book was just the right level for him and of course, he had to wear the hat while reading. He took both to show and tell and the whole class got to enjoy both. The Step into Reading company writes interesting, fun and challenging books for young readers. I am looking to them for one of his Christmas gifts.
