Q: Is it really only 31.5”H? Seems like that would not reach the back of the couch

Yes, and it depends how high the back of your digs may be. I used mine as an entryway table — but it doesn’t seem long enough to be a sofa-back table.

Q: The top width is 47.2 inches long, but how long is the bottom width? It looks smaller, but is that an optical illusion?

It is smaller than the top. It is approximately 37 inches long and 12inches wide

Q: How I can put it together?

The shelves attach to the legs with bolts (comes in the box) which can be hand tightened with the Allen key (comes in the box). Takes about 20 minutes.

Q: Package 5 on the last step. Can’t figure this step out. What is it for?

We had to return ours, the holes on the frame were not in the right places. I don't know the last step, sorry.
