A life saver!!
We have a 13yo Chinese crested with a predisposition to pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease. She has been hospitalized multiple times, the last time she was put on Hills k/d kibble prescription. However we could not get her to eat it without mixing a spoonful of Gerber baby food, and even that was a struggle some days. She didn't like the wet food either. After countless hours of online research and reviews I came across this brand & decided to give it a shot. All the kidney diets or any quality food seem to fall at a similar price point. It's nice you don't need a RX, but more importantly our dog actually wants to eat it. The ingredients are simple, safe and good quality. Our dog was stage 3 in Dec, we had more boodwork to retest her kidney values in March and they have slightly improved. Not by much-- but the goal is to slow the progression of the disease and this food is clearly doing just that. We couldn't be more grateful for this company & their magnificent product. There are not a ton of options available and we are grateful to have found one to keep our sweet little girl around as long as possible! Highly recommend! Update: June 2025. We've been consistently feeding this to our little crested and she's still plugging along! She has a couple teeth left so I came to buy some of the canned version and thought I'd update this review. Our little trooper is well past her 15th bday now and enjoying life! Her levels have been regularly tested and she is still holding strong at stage 3 with no further decline. She is aging with grace but this food has undoubtedly been a key component in her continued health and longevity. Thank you Square Pet for making this specialty formula!

Senior dog loves it
My senior Yorkie has renal failure and is very very picky. I have tried several Rx only foods, homemade food and super expensive "fresh" dog foods. This kibble has been the only food he actually likes. I am so thankful I found it.

Great for dogs with early or mild renal issues
Our pit box has some early stage i/ii kidney disease. Using this food 80% combined with a good store brand 20% (that isn't high in phosphorus) quickly brought her creatinine back down. Without mixing, we found it difficult to get her to eat her food at first, but eventually she would, must be an acquired taste. More recently she seems to really love this food when it isn't mixed at all, but would definitely overeat it if we let her. My guess is that there's some minor deficiency in this food, or maybe its just a little too low phosphorus & sodium for her. With a little mixture she inhales a healthy amount and is happy with it and the numbers are good by the vet. It's great to be able to pick this up without the hassle of an Rx even though our vet was happy to provide one. The price is a little steep but in line with similar products; amazing how just leaving out a little phosphorus makes it more expensive but it's worth it and I guess they know that.

Good alternative to prescription food
A good alternative to vet prescription dog food. I switched to this brand from blue buffalo because my dog has a chicken intolerance. I cut this with half homemade dog food and my dog’s kidney values have improved! Not issues with the transition when switching. I will say it does kind smell like cardboard and my dog isn’t thrilled to eat it by itself. A bit more on the expensive side, unfortunately all these types of diets are though.

Love it!
I recently tried SquarePet VFS Low Phosphorus Formula for my dog, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The combination of cage-free turkey and whole eggs makes it a high-quality option that my dog loves. I appreciate that it's designed for special needs, particularly for those with kidney issues. My dog has shown improved energy levels and overall health since we switched to this formula. The kibble is the perfect size and texture, making it easy for him to eat. Highly recommend this for any pet owner looking for a nutritious and tasty option for their furry friend!

Surprise
The food arrived. I scooped 1/2 a cup and my 18 year old senior dog ate it right away. She sniffed it at first. She proceeded to finish it without any commotion. I am thankful. I hope she will continue eating this dry food.

Well, I don't know what's in this stuff, but
My 15 year old Lab mix, who is fussy as h***, will actually eat this before he eats the home made chicken, rice, green bean, pea, sweet potato, and carrot stew that I make him. Once per month, I cook up a batch of this stew for him and I usually eat some of it too, because it is that good. I freeze (separately) 1 cup portions to give to Tohbi throughout the month. I used to mix the stew and the kibble together. But just to see if he preferred the stew to the kibble, I decided to have Tohbi do a taste test. I placed the stew in one side of his bowl and this dog food in the other side of his bowl. Every time, he will always eat the kibble first, before he will eat the stew. Now, this does hurt my feelings a little, but as long as Tohbi is happy, I'm happy. And Tohbi does seem to have perked up since I began feeding him this non-prescription, kidney-friendly kibble.
