New Testament Exegesis: A Handbook for Students and Pastors(3rd Edition)

I learned a great deal in Fee's book and other contributing Biblical scholars he cited in this book.
It was much easier to follow the methodologies Fee presented, especially the step-by-step process of writing an Exegesis paper. Also, the explanation to the readers of the importance of making the distinction between an "Exegesis paper" versus "a sermon." Sometimes, sermons sound more like a long Biblical commentary versus a sermon.

A "MUST HAVE" for anyone who desires to effectively study, understand and teach the Bible!
Whether you are just starting on the journey of Bible study, or whether you are an old timer with years of experience under your belt - this volume by Gordon Fee is sure to be a source of inspiration, instruction and a great resource to help you learn how to "do Bible study the right way". Fee breaks down the process flow from where to begin all the way to how to share it effectively with others. One of the most helpful features of "New Testament Exegesis" is that Fee provides tracks for those who have a working knowledge of Greek and an alternative model for those who have not had any training in original language studies -a real gem.Fee starts the book with a description of the full Inductive Bible Study Method (Inductive Bible study is the purest form of study, that allows the text to decide what you believe, where 90% of the preaching and teaching today is deductive - where you are looking at a character, subject or theme and look for Bible texts that will support what you are looking for).In Chapter I. Guide for Full Exegesis, the author breaks down the process from beginning to end with specialized sections designed to help those who are studying the various types of Scriptures that require special consideration (the Epistles, Narratives, the Book of Acts, and the Book of Revelation). In Chapter II. Exegesis and the Original Text, Fee walks you through the process of analyzing and utilizing the various tools and strategies to understand what the original text says and means. Even if you are not studied in Greek there is so much of what Fee shares in this section that will expand your Biblical horizon and help you better grasp the whole process of Bible study (and might just entice you to decide to undertake learning Greek yourself :-) )In Chapter III. Short Guide for Sermon Exegesis, expounds on the Exegetical Task, and how to move from Exegesis to Sermon. In Chapter IV. Aids and Resources for the Steps in Exegesis, Fee provides a list of recommended resources and tools that will help you on each rung of the exegetical ladder on the way to Biblical studentship and discipleship. He provides tools to assist in studying:Historical Context in GeneralEstablishing the Limits of the PassageParagraph overview/Provisional TranslationHow to do Sentence Flow or DiagramHow to launch out into effective Textual CriticismGrammarLexical AidsHistorical-Cultural BackgroundEpistolary FormsHistorical Context in ParticularLiterary ContentGospel FormsPericope AnalysisThe Narrative ContextHistorical QuestionsLiterary ContextApocalyptic FormBiblical TheologySecondary LiteratureHow to Choose the Best Commentaries (not all commentaries are created equal - in fact most commentaries actually work against a proper exegesis and application of the Bible) - Fee shows you which type you should useTranslationProper modern Application. The aids and resources in Chapter IV alone are worth many times the cost of the book!!!My wife and I are certified facilitators for leading and training others in the art of Inductive Bible Study. We teach and train in live venues and via live webinars. New Testament Exegesis: A Handbook for Students and Pastors should be on the desk (and on the Kindle) of everyone who desires to study and to teach the Word of God for the purpose of changing lives. That's my story and I am sticking to it!

A must have for students and pastors
Although some of the references to the apparatus and softwares are dated, Fee’s comprehensive method of Biblical exegesis and his lengthy list of resources is a must have for anyone interested in serious biblical interpretation and sermon preparation.A word of warning, at first glance the method appears daunting and the resources called for are massive! Chapter 3 presents an abbreviated version and a more user friendly option.

classic, and for good reason
There is no need to rehearse the virtues of Fee’s classic exegesis textbook. It is a venerated classic for good reason. The bibliographies are now out of date (but still useable for the most part). But the heart of the book—exegetical method taught by a seasoned and respected scholar—is as strong now as it ever was. Get the book. Read it. In a few years, read it again.

Overall helpful with some concepts lacking
Fee's work is a helpful tool for the pastor and student. Many of his ideas, especially his ideas about working through textual variants, are fresh and provide a solid push toward sound exegetical work. My main two criticisms of this book are: 1) His use of BCE and CE instead of BC/AD, and 2) His failure to flesh out integrative theology and the use of wider context in exegesis more thoroughly. He makes the comment that there are likely no references to the OT in the NT that are ignorant of the OT context, but he doesn't tell the reader how to integrate the theology of OT passages with the theology of the NT passages. This could have been done better by dealing with types/antitypes in the exegetical process. Virtually nothing is said about this important relationship within the Scriptures. The Bible student will benefit from Fee's work, but he'll need to look elsewhere for help in exegeting the New Testament with an integrative, whole-Bible approach.

Comprehensive but dated
There is a lot of information here on systematically exegeting the NT, ending in a research paper or a sermon. As is to be expected of a thorough approach, a year of Greek will be useful, but except for text criticism, not required. I was surprised by the number of referrals to other texts. Given the enormity of the subject, they are entirely appropriate, but unfortunately, quite dated. Not already being an expert, I don't know if any can be replaced by newer works so all that information is of little use.

Fees Exegesis book
It's largely a step by step process. He has lots of charts and diagrams that he wants you to refer back to and he directs you to lots of other resources that he suggests. He uses NASB and doesn't mention ESV. He mentions many translations and does explain how to use BDAG and Greek in the exegeis procedure. He uses a higher level of vocabulary and I find it to be a hard and slow and sometimes boring read. Most of it appears to be a manual more than a book. Fee does explain things but its still much like a manual for much of the book. The diagrams are helpful though and he makes good points.

Useful - but helps if you can read Greek
A lot of helpful material but if your knowledge of New Testament Greek is limited or non existent then it will be more of a struggle. However if you are serious about exegesis then some appreciation of the language it was originally written in is crucial. It is quite heavy going and I would look for other guides as well and seek other opinions before purchasing. However, I do appreciate the thoroughness but often sermon preparation has to be squeezed in. I note that he suggests 10 hours to prepare one sermon - those who are non-stipendiary or preaching several times a week might marvel at this!A lot of references to other useful books but these are almost all American and thus not always so readily available in the UK at reasonable prices; although possible to order from USA dealers.
