We have an only child (4 yrs) and as he is preparing for Kindergarten, wanted to make sure that he was getting the basics of how to express his emotions with other kids, since he is so used to expressing them with mostly adults around our family. So I bought a few of these, and we've enjoyed them so much that I bought the whole set.We read one of them every night along with several other story time books before bed. We can talk about the situations in the books, and relate parts of the books to situations that he is currently going through in Pre-K. Having said that, it's not that we did not know how to teach our child manners... these books were also a way for us parents to get better ideas on how to discuss these situations with our 4 year old in a way that he can relate to. If the teacher lets us know that he was not sharing very well that day, we have a small discussing about the situation and then we read the "How to Share With Others" book before we go to bed. This in turn puts our son's mind at ease, and helps him better explain his feeling earlier on in the day and gives him ideas on ways that he can handle the situation next time it happens. Quite simply, they help us communicate better as a family... and honestly, sometimes show us parents ways that we need to handle our own situations as well. Excellent series of books! I would recommend them to any parents of 2-6 year olds! Review: Great series of books! - I recently purchased a number of the books from these series and they are going over very well with the preschoolers I counsel. The stories themselves are written like social stories, instructing children how to handle certain social situations from a first person account. The books are very simple and straightforward. The text is brief and direct. The illustrations are relate-able and engaging and support the concepts very well. The children tend to look at the pictures and ask relevant questions--they notice the facial expressions and other details and make appropriate inferences. Each book has a guide for adults that has very useful suggestions for expanding discussion and for extension activities and games. I tend not to use those sections in other books, because I don't always see their usefulness, but these books seem include very relevant and helpful tips that I do intend to use. I am looking forward to buying even more of the books from this series!

... in this series to help our son make a better choice when he is in school
We bought a few of the books in this series to help our son make a better choice when he is in school, after he struggled with the structured routine of the pre-k classroom. Every now and then we will read a few of the books in the series and he always tells me something that his teacher tells him or one of his peers in his class to do instead of making a poor choice behavior wise. I would recommend any of the books in this series to read to your children and it gives you a positive way to help teach any child how to make good choices based on any situation. The favorite one to read to our boys at this time is the one about sharing and taking turns, with 3 little ones in the house all under the age of 6 it can get a bit difficult for them to share their toys in a friendly manner. There are books that are age appropriate for toddlers and for elementary age kids to learn from these books, but we just bought the books for the older kids when our son was 3 years ago. Some of the content was a bit too mature for him, so we just improvised and shared the most important parts of each page of the books until he was old enough to comprehend the actual story that is written in each of the books that we own from this series. Even using the pictures in the books can lead to many conversations about how to make good choices when you are at either at school or at home. These books are great tools to help a parent promote language development, while teaching our young ones about making good choices wherever they may be every single day.

Great lessons, without being heavy-handed about it.
This book pairs a simple, positive text about why we follow the rules with sweet illustrations of kids learning and playing together. My 3.5 year-old loves this book--he keeps putting it on top of the "to read" pile--and after we read it, we use it as a jumping-off point for talking about what happened to him at playschool that day, what he did that was fun, whether anyone there had a rough day and how the teachers helped, etc. While not our situation, I think this probably would also be a good book for young kids who haven't spent time in preschool yet, and who are expressing some anxiety about starting school.

LOVE this book
LOVE this book!! The author and illustrator did a wonderful job. I bought a couple of them together. Simple and fun way of teaching some very important fundamentals that I believe will help a child in getting along with others and knowing what behavior is acceptable and what is not. My son is 2-1/2 and picks these books to read. The artwork is great. Very simple, appealing to the eye, colorful. Not too many words but just enough. Great message. Love that they have kids of all different ethnicity and ability (for example, a little girl in a wheelchair). Would highly recommend this series!!!!

Great Character-Building Book For Young Children and Classrooms
Great resource book for teaching character -building. I teach 4s & 5s and teaching social development/problem-solving skills is always a part of my curriculum. In my earlier years of teaching, all of the resources I found for helping teach those skills was above their learning level. Now, years later, Cheri J. Meiners has hit the nail on the head! These are exactly the books I was looking for years ago! The children can relate to the stories and there are questions att he end for the teacher to use with the children. There is also more info in the back like additional books that can be read, vocabulary words, websites, etc. If you want to build character, help develop problem-solving skills and foster social skills in your classroom, then this series of books is for you and your classroom.
