I have not quite finished the puzzle yet but it seems as clear as the picture on the box.

The image is a painting. There is a copy inside the box. Very difficult puzzle.

How many outside pieces are there?

Did not count the border pieces so I have no idea. 1000 pieces total - although 2 were missing from the bottom border so I suppose 998
