Homestead Dry Dyes, Antique Cherry Brown

Mix it at the right ratios and this stuff goes a long way, doesn’t go bad in the container, and gives a GREAT color. The photo is pretty accurate - it’s a reddish brown that looks dark from aging. One coat wiped on over a water based conditioner looks like cherry heartwood. A second wiped on, or, alternatively, a first coat brushed on, looks like the photo. Just be careful to go quickly (?). Even after pre-wetting the wood with conditioner, the dye dries FAST. You can end up with some unsightly brush marks that can’t be masked easily. But maybe I’m just doing it wrong since I’m new to water soluble dyes.Best of all, There’s no VOC stink, and because it dries easily it can be varnished the same afternoon.

Although I didn't end up using it in the project only because the color didn't turn out to be just what I needed, it worked just as expected. This was the first time I ever used a dry dye, and the preparation and usage of it was just as information and instructions indicated it would act. It wasn't just the right color for the current project, but I will certainly use it in another, I'm sure.

Good dye. Used on pine. Comes out a little darker than picture with 2 coats of preconditioner and a lot darker with any less than that. With 3 coats it was hard to get it beyond a beige.

Used in the staining process of 80 year old pine door.

Works well and easy to work with.
