can you operate with only black ink if all colors are out? Really only need black.

I have the Epson WF-2540. You CAN operate with only black ink. You just have to change the settings on your computer to print in black and white only.

Yes, Epson makes the "200XL" in black and three colors. According to information from a testing site (not Epson), the XL cartridges hold about 2.5 times the ink of a standard cartridge. You can buy the XLs directly from Epson.com

how many 4 x 6 photos can be printed with this set of cartridges?

Sorry, I have no idea. I do know that in photo's, allot depends on how much is in the photo. Example would be a bowl of multi colored gum balls, would use your ink up faster then a simple photo of a bird. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

so if i chose to print a picture of a rainbow the colors will come out exactly in the picture i chose?

That is more of a function of the printer than a function of the ink. The ink is just the colour the printer can choose from. The printer is what does the actual decision on how much of each colour to use to synthesize all possible colours. If you want a real printer that prints exactly as what is on the screen, it won't use these inks and it will cost the same as a small car. This is a consumer product and the printers these inks fit in work just fine for the majority of non-professional photographers/designers. I print 4x6 borderless prints with these inks all the time and they show up near as possible to the original. Also keep in mind that unless you have an awesome camera, an awesome printer is useless. The printer is only as good as the data going in and if you are printing photos from your smartphone camera, it doesn't matter.
