I went to my regular endo appointment and asked for a prescription for nerve pain. She asked if I had tried the alpha lipoic acid as she had recommended on my last visit. I admitted that I didn't remember that recommendation so she wrote it down. When I got home, I researched the supplement and decided that I would order the 600 mg. and take it twice per day. I upped it to 3 x daily after a few weeks. At 6 weeks, I noticed a huge reduction in nerve pain. I rarely feel strong nerve pain now and when I do, it's mild. The only problem is that I have to take a lot of water with it to get it down. I don't know why, maybe the shape of the capsule. I don't have this problem with other meds or supplements. The second thing is that I need to take food with it otherwise it burns my esophagus a little bit after swallowing. The 3rd side effect for me is that my urine smells as if I had eaten asparagus. It's such an odd side effect but it doesn't bother me. Actually, none of the side effects bother me because this ala works so well. I'm glad I stuck with it for as long as I did . At 6 weeks, I really noticed a difference. My pcp was very interested when I told her about the alpha lipoic acid, asked questions and took notes. I can't wait to see my endo in a couple of days and report back about the effectiveness of this supplement. I chose this one because of the price. The other brands are super expensive. If I didn't need to concern myself with cost, I would pick one with a non-gelatin capsule.

I've been taking Alpha Lipoic Acid for quite some time as recommended by my physician. I have neuropathy in both feet and it causes pain all of the time especially at night in bed. I've taken different doses but taking 1200 mg everyday seems to do they trick for me. I no longer feel the need to put creams on my feet at bedtime to stop the pain. I can walk as long as I want and they don't hurt. And I am no long kept awake at night trying to sleep through the pain. As far as size and difficulty in swallowing, I have problems with most capsules and I've learned to just take my pills with a bit of applesauce instead of water and I have no problem. I learned this trick after cervical neck surgery that made it difficult to swallow anything but water for a while. I take several of my capsule vitamins and pills this way.

Used for pain relief in my feet. It helped during the day but did not relieve my foot pain at night!
