Do you leave it on all the time? Or only turn it on while you read the temperature? Wondering how long batteries last if on all the time.

I leave on all the time - so the electronics are stabilized. I've owned for about a year and all 4 units I got are still working fine. Hope this helps!

How are you supposed to hang this? The inside of a fridge or freezer is not magnetic and the hook is on the wrong side to attach to any shelf.

The Thermometer can be placed like a picture frame in the Refridgerator Shelf. In the Frezer the Thermometer can be hanged sideways on one of the Grilled Shelfes. Yes it would be helpful if the Hanging part of the Thermometer had a Swivel., to face the Digital Reading Part up Front

Whart are the 4 colors

Not sure I understand - 4 colors? The units I got were 4 units, all are white with LCD displays. Not aware of any "color" options. Hope this helps.

How long does it retain min/max values? Some of these wipe them out every 24 hours.

The min/max are retained until you manually reset them.
