I haven't had the opportunity to do any significant hiking in these and can't comment on how they hold up over time; that is the only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars. What I can say is that I normally wear a 91/2 shoe, bought a 91/2 in these and the fit was perfect. Due to their being laced rather than slip on I was able to try wearing two pairs of socks (as I would in very cold weather) and they were just as comfortable as with one pair. I was impressed at how comfortable they were right out of the box. I think you could wear them on a long hike right out of the box with no problem. But I wore them for a few hours the first day then the second day they felt even better, so I suggest giving them at least a short break-in before a day long hike. They appear to be a quality shoe that will hold up well, but time will tell on that score.

Great hiking shoes. Crazy comfortable!

I travel extensively hiking our amazing national parks. This moderately priced shoe wears well and provides a full day of comfort and safety. It is well ventilated while simultaneously being resistant to external water. The soles adhere to slippery surfaces and provide a sense of security on narrow ledges with loose rocks. Of course, trekking poles are also recommended to be utilized under these circumstances.

My first time wearing merrell. I wear a 9.5 in other shoes and got that size in these. The fit is perfect. The shoe isn't stiff out the box and very comfortable. I will be getting more styles and colors soon.
