I have purchased ford keyless entry key fob. I cannot program it to open the rear hatch door on my station wagon

All I had to do for my 2008 Mustang was to insert the key and turn it on (but just before it starts the engine) and off 8 times fast. On the 8th turn the door locks will lock and you then use the FOB to open the locks. If you tried this already, did your passenger doors unlock, even though you could not get your rear hatch to open? All the locks should be connected.
