Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships

I borrowed this book from my son, and gobble-read it, enjoying every page - and challenged by all the new (to me) ideas it contained. So I bought a copy for myself, and am re-reading it more slowly, but still enjoying it immensely. At 76 years old, I feel very lucky to have access to new thinking, and am hoping the challenge of studying this material will keep my own brain in good trim.

Great explanation of how the mind works in social situations

Meaty and interesting, nay fascinating. Something I will refer back to again and again.

So insightful and interesting. I studied Psychology at uni so did have some background knowledge, but I still learnt so many more things from this book. Goleman uses many examples which makes it interesting to read. Couldn't put it down!

This book is for people who are interested in understanding why some are more friendly and tolerant than others. The message you ultimately get from the book is that individuals who do things that come across to you as hard to understand may be under influences they themselves have not recognized. You can only empathize with them and therefore overlook their weaknesses while focusing on the strengths. This is the way to get the best out of our fellow humans. compared to other second-hand books I bought this did not look very clean. But it's ok as long as the content is in good conition

Social intelligence is the next step after you as an individual develop emotional intelligence. It really helps in your development of social intelligence if you have more than one or two people to interact with in your personal life and at your job. This was hard for me because I am quite introverted. I am making a conscious effort to join more "group" activities and hobbies. Now I manage a volunteer book club, and in my professional life, I am learning how to ask my book editing clients to pay me for the long hours I devote to making their books beautifully readable. Most of them are saying, "OK, great job, I will pay you!" Find some things you like to do and people you like to do them with. The more you practice the ideas shown in this book in your life outside work, the better you will become at interacting and working with others on the job. Don't be a hermit, at least not as a permanent lifestyle choice. Someday you will need another person's help; practice by being a helper to others first. Social Intelligence can be a life-changer for you.
