Heartbreakingly Real
Someone recomended this book to me a couple of years ago. They had recently found out that I had been self harming for years and had been recently trying to stop. When they asked me why I felt a need to do it, I immediately answered that 'it makes me feel real - I need to feel real'. They told me about this story. After reading it for the first time, I cried. It simultaneously filled me with relief and confusion - I felt empathy towards a toy rabbit, whom I could actually relate to! The illustrations are beautiful and the story is sweet and sad. I now read it to my sixteen month old daughter who points out the rabbit with delight. It is certainly a story that can be read by a variety of people, children and adults. The message it sends out is heart warming to hear. I only wish that I had read it as a child...

Everything I Need to Know about Life I Learned From the Velveteen Rabbit????
I took off one star for the exaggerated reverence in which this book seems to be held in some quarters. It's sweet, and a tearjerker, but when it comes to preaching a sermon based on it, as I recently heard done - well, that's a step too far. I don't think the Skin Horse's insights are the key to life and spirituality and everything. A child should meet with it on the child's own terms, to take or leave- then it's easy to see how it might resonate in the memory. But adults treating it like Scripture, no. Maybe I've just been talking to the wrong people. Actually I bought this one purely because our old one had gone missing, and the bookshelf wasn't complete without it

Lovely story that stands the test of time.
Some beautiful and very poignant quotes in this book, particularly as a more elderly reader sharing with a young child and reflecting on that relationship as they grow up.

Timeless and beautiful
I love when you rediscover a book from your childhood and just reading the title sparks a memory so strong you can actually remember the smells and sounds of the time. I adore this book. It is the epiphany of goodness and nature. As a child I didn't realise the message deep inside, but I guess that's the beauty of it. I didn't have to understand it was a message for it to be beautiful and make sense. As an adult, I can't wait to share this book with my four-year. This story is timeless. I hope some day my daughter grows up to read this book to her child.
