What’s great: My dad has fond memories of Slovenian potica, and he said this was perfect. His exact words were “This is the food that will be served in heaven.” He likes it sliced and spread with butter. He was absolutely delighted with the taste. UPDATE: After I posted my first review, asking for help because the second roll had gotten moldy before we could eat it, Stern’s Bakery promptly contacted me, apologized, promised to look into what might have gone wrong, and offered my choice of full refund or replacement. My dad kept mentioning how much he had enjoyed the first roll, so I was happy to ask for replacement instead. I’m editing my review and giving five stars. I will definitely buy this again. But from now on, we will put it in the fridge as soon as we receive it! PREVIOUS REVIEW: What wasn’t great: We received this on August 6, and it was fine. There were no instructions on the package or on the seller’s page about refrigeration, and the poppyseed rolls were still sealed in their packaging, so we left them on the counter. We ate the first one this week, and it was fine, but when we went to open the second one today (August 14), it had a huge patch of mold on it, even though it was still sealed in its packaging. The seller’s page says “refunds if unsatisfied, no questions asked,” and “This product is eligible for return/replacement.” I wanted to ask for a refund/replacement of the spoiled product, but there’s no way to do it. The only option is “return product.” I clicked there and then it says “This product is not eligible for return.” Well, fair enough, nobody wants a returned moldy poppyseed roll, but I DO want a refund or replacement for my spoiled product, because the seller did not warn us to refrigerate it. I checked the seller’s website and there’s no customer service. I clicked through multiple links on Amazon about how to get refunds for spoiled goods, but it always directs me to that same “request return” button, which is not what I want and will not help me. Usually if I had a problem like this, I would prefer to contact the seller to solve my problem rather than leave a negative review, but here it seems I have no option. I’m giving three stars as an average between the first roll (perfect) and the second roll (in the trash.) If the seller contacts me to refund or replace, I’ll happily edit this review. Excellent, very similar to what my wife's family makes. Now if they would make nut roll and pure whip rolls I'd be in my glory.

Well, i went to a section to tell the seller something which gave me limited space to say what i wanted to say and then i find this part so not sure what the difference is so i will once again try to explain what is going on. First i want to say that I have bought this poppyseed cake many times over the years from Stern's. Most of the time it was perfect except for a couple times when the filing was very scant but still edible. This last order on the other hand had the top crust/dough area smelling and tasting like burnt oil. If you take the top dough off then the bottom part was ok. I don't know how it got thru quality control cuz you can smell the rancidity of it! As with another reviewer I would have liked to have a way to contact the seller before leaving a bad review but that does not seem to be an option at all. I even tried to do it thru the Stern's Amazon store but no contact info there. I would appreciate either a refund or the cakes to be replaced. Thank you.

Very good. Although one of the two was slightly undercooked, still doughy, and squished. Although, overall very tasty and planning to purchase multiple times.

fresh, moist, delicious

My father was 100% Hungarian, so I grew up with him making poppyseed cake. This is the most delicious poppyseed cake I have tested other than my father’s.

My second order and this one wasn't as moist and lacking in taste.

Delicious authentic poppyseed kolach. This recipe is nicely sweetened with honey. We really like this new recipe. The roll is nicely sweetened and moist even after freezing.
