Dunkirk [Blu-ray + Digital Download]

Just might be one of the most stunning films to own on 4K UHD disk. It looked insane on my LG Oled 77 inch TV. Sound is exceptional here - it will test you home sound system to the limit. A definitely must own on physical media.

Good film

Director Christopher Nolan brings us a new movie all about the events in Dunkirk in 1940. With the British and French troops backed against the sea and cut off by the Nazis, it became a desperate race against time to save as many troops as possible. And thanks to civilian help, a legend was born.. If you don't know all that, then you should have paid attention during history lessons. But very brief opening captions do quickly set the scene. Right after that, the bullets start to fly. The focus of the movie is both the human survival instinct. And the urge to do what you can to help others. There are several main narrative strands. We follows what happens to ordinary British soldier Tommy. We follow the efforts of a naval commodore [Kenneth Branagh] to coordinate the evacuation, and watch as things go wrong constantly. We follow a determined Spitfire pilot [Tom Hardy] Also equally determined is Mr Dawson [Mark Rylance] owner of small boat the Moonstone, who has put to sea to get there to help. Those on the beach are under attack from a powerful and largely unseen enemy, and helpless in the face of this. Which is something the film conveys superbly from the moment those bullets start flying. Those in the air and those at sea face other obstacles. And it becomes a race against time for all. The film plays tricks with time. Since those on the beach had to wait up to a week. And those in the air could get there in an hour. And those in the little ships could get there in a day, the experience was different for all concerned. Thus the land, sea and air narratives do move at different paces. But they cross over at points. So what you get isn't entirely linear at times. But once you realise this conceit is going on, it works. It does make you use your brain. But there's nothing wrong with film making like that. The score tries to enhance the mood and add to the tension. It will be perhaps an acquired taste. But those who get it will love it, and find it really works. The visuals are nearly all done for real rather than with special effects. Resulting in very convincing air and sea battles, and some of the best aerial action you will ever see in a movie. It tries so hard for realism that the dialogue of the pilots is not easy to hear. But that's the way it was. So it's how it should be. Characterisation is minimal, but this isn't a film about character development. And all the main characters are perfectly well rounded anyhow and very easy to follow and sympathise with. Some are brave. Some do things you might find morally tricky, as a result of their urge to survive. But given what they are going through, you can't judge them for it. So the film does make you think about how you might handle similar circumstances. And if you have seen on the big screen, it's worth seeing again on the small screen. Because even without the bigger screen and stereo sound, it's no less gripping a watch. And seeing it a second time means you notice, once you know the structure, lots of little details that you will not have spotted before. Superb film making. and a memorable movie experience. For absolutely anyone, I strongly recommended The Little Ships, which details how, in a quest for realism, some of the little ships used in the film were actual ones from 1940. This might cause something to get stuck in your eye that makes water come out of it. Same for the Dunkirk Spirit, which looks at what that phrase means. But as a whole, it's a superb making of documentary which tells you so much. It does also have the usual flyer with a code to use to get a digital copy of the film onto a digital device. A great film. And a great disc of extras A five star dvd.

It seems a large minority of people have been disappointed by this film, citing an inability to connect with the characters or get engaged with the plot. I found the story perfectly compelling, not least as it is based on real events. As for the characters, they're not especially fleshed out, but they don't need to be. It's a combat situation with no time for character-defining speeches or elaborate back-stories. You empathise with the protagonists on an immediate human level, just like you would for any random person in a war. Mark Rylance in particular is very affecting, and represents the heart of the film; a civilian willingly putting himself in danger out of a combination of duty and altruism. There is a building sense of dread throughout the film, aided by clever editing and a deliberately invasive and unsettling soundtrack. It's an effective combination. Picture and sound quality are excellent. Complaints that the dialogue is hard to hear are more likely the result of a bad sound system than any problem with the film or the disc. The film was shot on both 65mm film and IMAX, and as a result the Blu-ray periodically switches between two aspect ratios depending on the source. The results are similar to the Blu-ray releases of Nolan's last two Dark Knight films, and it's not as distracting as it might sound. The 65mm scenes are brilliant, and the IMAX scenes look even better. The accompanying special features cover many aspects of the making of the film from wardrobe to editing to set building to stunt-work. It's a comprehensive look at the production with lots of interview clips. (If anything, it gets a little bit tiring to hear Nolan constantly reiterate his desire to capture everything for real, in camera, in reality, really, actually, for real, with actual real ships that are really there. He brings it up every few minutes, rephrasing the same point over and over, but you have to give him credit for sticking to his guns. It means a lot to him, and he's clearly dedicated to his work.) It's a very well-made film, and it's served by an appropriately well-done Blu-ray release.

I found this an enjoyable movie. Once one works out that the main theme of the movie is virtually an overall account of the majority of events put into a one day story, it is very, very well done. I felt it is not overly violent, however quite graphic and portrays the anxiety of the escaping British and French with the fear of aerial bombardment, ships sinking at sea and just being left behind very well. The comment of the young British soldier on his safe return to England, that we have let the people down, and yet the enthusiasm and just relief by the British people that their Army has been brought safely home is very well portrayed right at the end of the movie. The movie also depicts a very calm and professional RAF and the Royal Naval Beach Officer always with a calm and professional demeanor as the situation on the beach gets worse and then as the last of the British Army officers leaves the Naval Officer informs him, that, Now to get the French off. However, from an English point of view I suppose the legend of the little ships sailing across the Channel to rescue their Army and bring it home is very well portrayed in the movie.

Everything worked out great - no problems with this order!!!

Spesso Nolan mi lascia perplessa, ma in questo caso, alla prima visione, mi ha catturata. Ci vuole un attimo a capire che 3 storie differenti si svolgono su 3 piani temporali differenti; ma quando l'ho capito mi è parso geniale, molto più di tanti altri film di Nolan per cui si esce dal cinema chiedendosi non "Qual è il significato esistenziale di questo film?" ma "Un momento, il Joker ha detto che ha ucciso X poliziotti, ma in realtà sono Y, ma allora..." Invece Dunkirk non ha difetti. Il fatto che io sia una fanatica di film di guerra aiuta, ma come pseudo-fan di Nolan devo anche dire che è una delle sue opere migliori.
