... am giving it 5 stars because it is extremely good value for money
I am giving it 5 stars because it is extremely good value for money, considering the branded one. I am using it with my canon 60d and sigma 105 macro. It works really well. It can produce powerful light on full power which may overwhelm your subject. Luckily you can control the power output (the ratio button) to match your requirement. You can use it in ETTL mode, or manual mode. You can connect an external power supply if using in studio or home and save a lot of batteries. It can be programmed to provide flash exposure lock, flash exposure compensation, flash exposure bracketing and and second curtain sync in addition to extra 9 functions (mostly to do with controlling saving mode, backlights etc).Ik wish they would give more rings, sigma uses 62 mm which wasn't provided (only 52, 58, 68, 72mm are provided. No big deal you can buy them cheap enough), luckily I had few from earlier led unit. The flash unit clips to the adapted on the front of your lens very securely. There is no play and it does not turn as you move.On my camera it appears under external flash func. Setting menu and you can control the following from the camera:1. Flash mode - ETTL II or manual2. Shutter sync - 1st or 2nd curtain3. FEB (flash exposure bracketing)4. E-TTL II meter - evaluative, or average.5. Zoom6. Wireless function. Can control other flashes to give even more light for creativity.7. Firing group8. FEC - Flash exposure compensation9. A:B fire ratio (ratio of power of master to slaves or groups. All this for a fraction of BRANDED ONE.

Ring of bright light
Bearing in mind this Yongnuo YN-14EX flash is a sixth of the price of the Canon version, I am certainly not disappointed, I'm actually pleasantly surprised. I watched a youtube review of this flash (along with many others) and criticisms were: it's lack of high-speed sync; and it's inability to be used as a master/slave flash. With that said the Canon MR-14EX ii is £675 so I didn't expect an exact replica and for my 'amateur' needs this is a great addition to my flash stable. I'm unlikely to use it for anything other than macro photography, although I may experiment with portraits at some point, but this has the ability to switch intensity ratios between the left and right bulbs, or turn one off completely. It is eTTL or manual operation, and can be operated through the camera controls (Canon 5d Mkiii) including ev compensation. It only comes with four Adapter rings (52 mm, 58 mm, 67 mm, 72 mm) but as my Laowa 100mm 2:1 Macro lens is 67mm, I don't need anything else. Although the 52mm and 58mm may be useful if using reversing rings on other lenses. As for the lack of master/slave ability, it's doubtful I would use it for such but I do have the Phottix Strato TTL wireless flash units if I needed it as an off camera flash, although I cannot think of a situation where I would. There are cheaper models on the market, and much more expensive and if money was no object, I would buy the Canon, but I buy within my budget and anticipated use of an item so for me this is perfect. I bought mine for £120 through Amazon, but there are slightly cheaper sources if you want to scan the internet. I just used Amazon as they have a good reputation for delivery and returns.

Worked well for a while but then just stopped working
Bought about 3 years ago and seemed fine at first; appeared to be sturdy and well made and worked as expected. However I've only used it a handful of times and last night it just stopped working; it turns on and flash fires when test button pressed but when you try to take a picture, nothing, no flash. Have tried other flashes on camera and they work OK and also tried this flash on other camera but still won't flash. So obviously an internal wiring fault. I know this was much cheaper than the Canon alternative but I can now seen why! And not really much of a saving if it stops working after a few outings with it!Would not recommend.

Great value, does the job
I bought this to replace a much more expensive Canon macro ring flash which gave up the ghost after years of service. This Yongnuo does the job just as well. It seems a bit more 'plasticy' than the Canon but at the price, I have no complaints. It comes with stepper rings so the flash fits any of my macro lenses - ideal. Recommended.

Good macro flash
Using this with a Canon 70D camera with an EF-S 60mm lens for macro. Powerful flash with good range of settings. Gives good results. Very good value for money.

Longevity questionnable.
The product was fine initially and seemed like a great deal.I've now been using it lightly (average a few photos a week) for about 6 months.I've had to change the batteries about 3-4 times now and the compartment that holds the batteries no longer closes properly- I've had to tape it shut and even then its still not great. Its a bit disappointing as I've not used it much and always been very careful with it.If it had a warranty I'd send it back.

A great product that will make an impact on your photos immediately!
Love it! Love it! Love it! This has taken my close-up and macro photography to a whole new level. Great quality and performance. Easy to use, if you have any knowledge of flashes, at all!Edited 5/25/2018 - Several reviews have claimed that the battery door has broken off. After reading the reviews, I have not had this problem at all. I carefully push the door in and slide it down with care (Carefully, like I am with all my equipment). Still working great!
