I tested the swabs to make sure they work on items I knew would and wouldn't contain lead. The swabs gave me accurate results. I use them in second hand stores. I bring a small travel size bottle with me and spray some water on the swabs to activate them. They work in very quickly.

Wanted to check to see if old china I had from the 60’s might be contaminated. The ‘test swab’ is supposed to change color when it is wet, and then you swab the object. Test swabs (I tried several) never changed colors initially after wetting them before using. So I still don’t know.

I recently purchased these Lead Test Swabs and was thoroughly impressed with their performance. The test was quick, easy to administer, and provided clear results. They're fairly easy to use and did change color when tested on leaded solder. That said, the color change wasn't super dramatic, so you really need to swab quite a bit and look carefully to check.

These swabs turn pink when there is a high percent of lead. But when there is a small or medium amount it is very hard to determine with these compared to other brands I’ve tried.

Living in an old house it was full of lead and these helped a lot. Super easy to use, accurate, good quality, fast results, and cheaper than buying them from Walmart!

Sure, we all know about the dangers from old lead paint chips or degraded lead water pipes (we’re lookin’ at you, Flint). But there are potential hazards that can be found even in well-kept, middle-class homes and neighborhoods, and the findings can be surprising.I ordered the Leaping Lynx lead test swabs because of ongoing concerns about old ceramics, glassware, and other items acquired over many years. In my photos I’ve provided a few examples of the results. The tests included household casual dishes, some older vintage dishes, Venetian glassware, some ornaments, and more. My results are all over the map – with lead or heavy metals detected in a number of items I tested.SOME GOOD THINGS ABOUT THESE SWABS:• Easy to follow instructions. Dip the swab in water, rub the tip for 30-seconds on the item to be tested, then compare the swab tip to the color guide on the bottle.• The container of 30 swabs runs about $17 (at the time of this review), compared to the Big Brand Name that runs around $50 for 8 tests. An ample number of swabs means it’s possible to test a wide variety of objects without breaking the bank.BUT A FEW NOT SO GOOD THINGS:• There are no warnings or cautions included on the container. The swabs contain sodium rhodizonate as the active ingredient. This substance itself is hazardous and can cause acute health problems like irritation and inflammation if it comes into contact with skin, eyes, or mucus membranes. Omission of this information is a big oversight.• The swabs are listed as being sensitive for lead detection at 2 mg/cm2, which is not as sensitive as the industry standard of 1 mg/cm2. Translation? These swabs may not detect lead or heavy metals when they're present at lower concentrations. Also, I couldn’t locate information about the rate of false positive or false negative tests when using these swabs.• Sodium rhodizonate doesn’t just test for lead – it also can react and change color in the presence of other heavy metals.BOTTOM LINE: Testing for lead and heavy metals is definitely better than *not* testing for the presence of these known neurotoxins. The Leaping Lynx test swabs are relatively inexpensive as well as being easy to use – when used with appropriate caution. The test swabs certainly do demonstrate a chemical reaction in the presence of lead and/or other heavy metals.
