Don't waste your money. Garbage.
Piece of crap. Turned up all the way and still barely audible. Depth range is less than 2 inchesItem is either defective or just junk.

Perfect for my need
Item worked exactly as described and as I needed it to. Used it to find a break in my Invisible Fencing that I had been trying to locate by other means for two days. This arrived and within an hour I had it assembled, directions read and my break found and fixed.

Terrible instructions, but it actually works!
I got this out of the box and the (included) batteries put in. The directions were terrible and made no real sense, but after watching a quick youtube video I figured it out. You connect the red wire clamp to one end of the wire you want to trace. Then turn it on and turn on the receiver device. On the transmitter you then push the magnifying glass icon and it send the signal down the line. You leave that on while you use the receiver to trace it. I used it to find the break in our electric dog fence and was able to find it pretty easily. Just know this is a $35 device so it isn't going to be 100% obvious, but it is 95% accurate.

Works great with new batteries.
It worked only after replacing the pos batteries. After new batteries it worked very well. Put the original batteries on the meter & both were under voltage.

effective for dog fence tracing, excellent price
I needed to find an invisible fence type buried wire that was cut. This wire is typically 1-3 inches below the ground, with sections of it almost at the surface in the mulched garden areas. I can’t tell you if this would work with deeper wires but the box claims that it would. This tool worked quite well in locating the break. Quick once I was setup. Starting with a known location, I swung it back and forth tracing the wire farther and farther out, listening. The signal was distinct, louder over the wire, faded away with distance, and stopped flat within a few inches of the actual break. Then I switched the end of the fence connected to the unit and traced the wire up to the break from the other direction. I was able to find the wire by scraping away at the dirt in about an 8 inch circle down about 3 inches (In this case this was made easier by being able to see the dig marks of the work that broke the cable.). Without knowing the likely cross point I probably would have been within 16 inches.Device comes with 2 x 9 volt batteries and a small screw driver to open the battery compartments- nice touch. However with this unit, as with some others, you need a ground stake and a wire to connect the ground stake to the sender device, neither a stake nor a wire were included. You might have a piece of bare metal that can be inserted a few inches deep lying around, or an actual metal spike, and almost any wire could then connect- I needed about 5 feet of wire to reach from my dog fence wire in the garage to the ground outside. It was helpful to practice with the receiver first at a location where I knew where it was. Be sure to both turn on and then press send on both the receiver and sender (2 steps each)Except for the missing stake and wire this was a great purchase at a very low price

Will not find wire more than a few inches deep
I bought the unit to trace a broken wire to a irrigation valve. The snit would trace the wire for a short distance next to the house, where the wire was only a few inches deep. Once the wire went deeper, however, the unit produced no signal. After I discovered that I had cut the wire with shovel in a recent planting, I tried tracing the wire again all the way to the valve. The wire enters the valve box at approximately 12 inches underground, (the depth of the valve box), but the unit would not produce a signal even immediately next to the valve box. The transmitter unit was grounded and the sound on the receiver set at max volume.

Works better than expected
I found the break in my underground (2" deep) dog fence pretty quickly. I have a long-twisted set of wires from the dog transmitter; they induced the signal onto the wire that was not connected which made it seem like there was no break. For the price it is great. The image with the screw in drywall on this items description is funny...
