An adorable tactical puzzler...
When you're gen x like me, you kind of learned to lean towards action adventures or third person shooters out of an almost pavlovian negative stimulus response held over from the bad old days of the VGA turned based RPG. Gen Xers by now are already wincing and laughing with hysterical tears of remembered agony at that, I know. For those that blissfully DON'T remember those days, suffice it to say that there was a point not that many years in the horrifying past when game developers thought that any old 16-bit sprite would do as long as you slapped the words RPG (RolePlaying Game) in front of it and, of course, being too cheap to develop actual GAME MECHANICS, these games always used turn based mechanics based on the old RNG (random number generator- the computer equivalent of rolling the dice). So, yeah, us hardened gaming vets of Gen X age and older generally tend to shiver in horror if not openly WEEP as our PTSD flashbacks invoke blue green visions of mashing the spacebar over and over in a vain effort to just. get. ON. WITH. THE. DANGED. GAME. AL.REA.DY!!!!! *ahem* Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, turned based games. I picked up Mario+Rabbids because I had heard from my younger friends and family that turn based games had changed and that this game was PERFECT for an aging puzzler like myself to try out the new mechanics that many (not ALL! I was warned but many) games have developed during the years that I had been attending my court appointed VGA RPG Survivors Support Group meetings. (Rest assured that I have indeed learned that all Computer Lives Matter and that a sledgehammer to the motherboard is not an acceptable rejoinder to a badly made game). Any-way, point is that these tactical turn based mechanics are honestly really FUN as is this game! I won't front, I am a sucker for a good gag delivered with nice timing and tongue firmly placed in cheek and in that respect, Mario et al and the Rabbids do not fail. Mechanics-wise, my PTSD is actually starting to respond to this exposure therapy and it certainly helps that it's liberally laced with lots of relaxing puzzles as well as mellow exploration of a very beautifully created environment. Basically? It's a really well done game period. Animation is gorgeous, humor isn't just a chuckle worthy sight gags either as it shows a remarkable amount of self-awareness on the part of the game developers and while the puzzles aren't exactly diabolically difficult- there are a lot of them and the more mellow level of thought fits far better with the game's easy going nature than they would have if they HAD been really tough. The level of thought during the tactical battles is a little higher than that of the puzzles but not sooo tough that even a total noob to these tactical turn based games can't muddle her way through after a couple of tries. I have been told that the RPG-type progression system has beem streamlined, which for someone new to this kind of combat is perfect but for someone well used to it, might want to find a challenge somewhere that's else. This is NOT to say to them to guve it a miss because, they might very well enjoy the more relaxed and humor filled nature of it the same way I have been enjoying the puzzles in this game but, basically? Yeah, this game isn't for banging your head against a wall trying to figure out whatever you're stuck on- it's for relaxing with for a little while and maybe getting an unexpected chuckle or two. As that type of game? Yes, this game not only wears that fact on its sleeve PROUDLY, it steaks it's claim on that spot with quite a few rocket launchers and maybe a hand grenade or two. So, no matter your age or game style preference (except oddly enough, platformer-go figure! Lol), whether it's tactical turn based, puzzler or even a little RPG, Mario+Rabbids is a nice little rest and relaxation that has been nothing short if enjoyable.

Trying something different
My granddaughter loves video games using her Switch. She likes all types of games, prefer video games that can teach her something or makes her wonder about things and exploring. Nice game she loves it.

We love it
We’re used to a different type of Mario game but we love it. It’s more of skill and strategic wars. It’s fun but maybe for 8+

Good but not great game
This was a gift for my 6 year old nephew. It was as expected, but lacked the interest holding characters and game play that I was expecting. My nephew said that the new characters weren't anything special and he had a ho-hum attitude about the game.

Recomendo.

It's really hard to place this game in any specific realm. I LOVED the Paper Mario games (Well, even the newest one. That one was soft, but still fun.) I LOVED the platforming of the normal Mario games, all the way back. Where would I place this? To me, it feels much like Paper Mario, but less RPG-ish (Which it is still heavy RPG) and more combat strategy. It's tough, so adults who are hell bent on getting every level perfect will struggle but still enjoy. However, this does not negate it for children either. My daughter has just as much fun with this as I do. And that is something I feel Ubisoft hit square on the head. A way to make adults and children have fun in a strategy game. Imagine if Heroes of Might and Magic was difficult for adults, but in the same breath completable (AND enjoyable) by younger children. I saw a LOT of nervous posts about Rabbids in here, and I was skeptical. But to be honest, I love the spin. The humor change is a nice change (And removes what has been 30 years of stagnating Mario humor.) And the variety in the Rabbids are amazing. I laugh the most at Rabbid Princess and she stays in my party full-time just for the comedy value. But they're all adorable. The mix of enemies is absolutely hilarious as well. The idea of combining CRAZY Rabbid + <Insert Nintendo character> = Ludicrous enemy is awesome. World 1 boss is hilarious. (Hint/Spoiler-ish: Use Rabbid Princess at least once to trigger the World 1 boss, and pay close attention to her mouth...) There is plenty of built-in replayability. From getting perfect on every combat area, to replaying world with new abilities to unlock new areas, to the Toad challenges and such, I feel that I will be at this a long time. There is PLENTY of obscure adult humor in this, as is my hint above. This game isn't without its weaknesses however. The lack of platform feel to the game when out of combat is TERRIBLE. Even with the fixed feel to Paper Mario, it still had a sort of platform feel to it. However, with Beep-O (Or as our entire house calls Beep-O, Rhoomba) leading the pack, there is no jumping, no sliding, nothing besides what is scripted from interacting with something like a pipe (And they 'roll' through pipes... Wha?) Maybe further in the game, but now, its not there. Also, the combat vs exploration. Combat is nice, fluid, and very fun. However, I feel my mind tugging at thoughts like 'Mario should be able to Goomba-stomp out of the box, not with an unlocked skill, and be able to do it without a boost' and 'Luigi in many Nintendo titles can jump higher and thus likely further than Mario.' - I get balance would be tough, but many of us die-hards may struggle with these nuances of character. I would have liked to see Mario rely more exclusively on head jumps, and Rabbids rely on guns. Exploration, at least as far as I'm in, is pretty much non-existent. Very linear, which is unfortunate. Many times, you go from fight, walk 5 blocks away, and bam, another fight. Rinse, repeat. Even the 'secrets' and 'puzzles' are weak at best so far. The collections are almost insulting. You have to do it to unlock weapons, but it feels insulting finding 3d art, murals or soundtracks in a box. HOWEVER, at the end of the day, what they have set out to do in this game, they have done BEAUTIFULLY. I have been BURIED in the game since I got it, and it is FLAT OUT FUN. If you like a little turn-based strat, you will love this. If you like Mario and want a new demented spin on humor, you will love this.

Mario + Rabbids looks easy and simple on the outside, but inside there is a deep and challenging game that strategy RPG veterans will enjoy. When it was announced, I was super skeptical whether this game would simply hold your hand and walk you through it. And while the game does offer an easy mode, even that isn't always that easy. I've completed the main game and I'm still working on the challenge levels. The game starts to get difficult in World 3 - my tip is to ensure you're experimenting with different characters and style of combat. Depending on the types of enemies and the layout of the map, you may want to go in with close range attacks like Mario's hammer or Princess Peach's shotgun, while other levels will need you to hang back and attack from a distance with weapons such as Luigi's sniper rifle. It's also VERY important to manage the "element" of the weapon such as bounce and honey. A particularly great strategy is to activate one of the "hero sight" specials from Mario, Luigi, or Peach then attack an enemy with bounce weapons. If it activates bounce on an enemy, that will trigger one or more special attacks to get fired off in a single round - this enables a HEAVY amount of damage in tough fighters against bosses or other high health enemies. Mastering the combos and customizing the load out of your squad is what leads to victory. Planning and coordinating attacks moves in advance is critical to successfully beating some of the tougher battles. You can always switch to Easy Mode if the fights get too tough, but it still will be a challenge. The aesthetics of the game is beautiful. Even though each weapon is technically just a skin of the same weapon type, it still looks really cool. The characters are animated in such a fun and playful way that I can tell there was a lot of love put into bringing them to life. The world itself has so many neat things to explore and I enjoyed just wandering around the "overworld" completing the little puzzles and finding hidden items between encounters. I think Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a great new Mario RPG/strategy game that offers many unique game play features, fun world and characters, and excellent overall experience. I'm hooked and can't wait to play it through to the end.
