No, it's not a wind up watch. Mine was dead, too. It came with a spare battery. It died quickly. I threw it away.

Does the back come off to replace the battery?

I haven’t tried doing that. I know they came with a extra battery but the watches work well with the one already inside. A good way to preserve the battery life is to pull the stem of the watch out if not wearing for a while. I do really like the watches.
