The use of activated carbon in aquariums seems to be a debatable item these days. I for one have been using this product for years and there are several uses for it. I think the debates come in when people get misled by companies making claims that are untrue just to sell there product. I do not see that issue with Penn Plax products though. There are scientific studies showing the importance of using activated carbon. Just google it..I dont want to bore you with details. This product in particular I have been using since I got my canister filter over a year ago. It seems to come in a different style box every time though..Weird But the contents are always the same. Simply rinse the carbon thoroughly and then add it to your canister. Its that easy. Let the carbon the work of absorbing a number of dissolved contaminants such as; chloramines and chlorine, tannins (which color the water) and phenols (which cause odors). There are several important toxins that activated carbon does not remove. Most notably, it does not remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. So it doesn't aide in toxin removal during the initial aquarium setup. Change it out once a month. Because activated carbon binds with the compounds it removes, it eventually becomes ‘full’ and can no longer remove any other contaminants. Going for an extended period of time without replacing the carbon will not harm your tank. However, it will eventually lose its ability to remove toxins from the water. Heres my thing with this product and Amazon. Watch the prices. Every seller out there sells it for a different amount. Stock up when a seller comes on and offers it at a lower price. Dont wait until you need it. Prime members, like myself get 2 days shipping but if you can get this product from another seller at a cheaper price but only get free shipping, its worth it..you may save upwards of 3 bucks a box. Always check items sold by other sellers. Either way, they have always been cheaper than my local pet store. And it is still cheaper than filling bags with this tuff by buying it in bulk. I purchase activated carbon pellets usually and fill my own bags (i prefer pellets,they seem to filter better and longer)but these just make cleaning the canister less gross,same with replacement sponge.. i would rather not ever touch any of this,but just tossing the old charcoal bag out and throwing this one in (after rinsing of course) just makes the whole job easier. They’re a little skimpy on the amount of charcoal,but that’s expected. I have filtration rocks that I also toss in the basket. For the convenience and making this job one step easier I’m sold on these and the replacement sponges.
