No way 8.1”. They are about 1 1/2”-2”. Regular size of a clip.

Q: How long are these clips?

The clip section that will hold the hair is 2 1/2 inches, the entire apparatus is 3 1/4inches.

Q: Will these be good for a child playing hairdresser on a doll? Asking for Santa.

Depends on the age of the child, but I tend toward "No". The clips take a bit of pressure to open and they are rather large to be used on a doll. They are designed to hold quite a bit of hair on an adult head.
