Am i reading correctly that this should not be used with ham it up as it will overheat?...trying to reduce the noise in my shortwave reception

I have been using a Nooelec NESDR SMArTee XTR SDR - Premium RTL-SDR w/ Extended Tuning Range, Aluminum Enclosure, Bias Tee, with the Ham It Up Plus with no problems. The Bias Tee, with it being enabled all time means that you cannot have an input which has a DC short circuit, such as a folded dipole, and this is a pain. I have also used the same one as in the query without issue, but am using that with Bias Tee powered 2m linear amplifier.

I bought the hamit up from you last week. the sdr part is getting red hot after 5mns. cannot use it because of heat.

It may be because you're using the SMArTee dongle and not the Nooelec NESDR SMArt . the smartee version supplies up to 200ma to power preamps..it cannot be switched off. If the HAMitup presents a loop i/p the smartee will try to give the full 200ma and get hot. Nooelec supply the Nooelec NESDR SMArt in their bundle with the hamitup. Check the i/p of the Hamitup with a meter , if it shows close to short cct thats the problem.

Are there any drawbacks to this smartee model compared to the basic smart? i have a smartee but want a second. wondering if any benefit to just smart?

No, the circuit design of SMArTee v2 and SMArt v4 are effectively the same. The difference is this has the bias tee (DC injector) circuit. It was designed to not affect performance over the frequency capability of the device, and does not--even in sensitive lab tests. If you don't mind the few extra quid you are generally better off with another SMArTee. The only exception I can think of is if you want to use an antenna that represents as zero ohm to the SDR (very rare). You cannot use that type of antenna with the SMArTee but can with the SMArt. Will this work on an android tablet using an otg cable usb adapter

Yes, the NESDR is compatible with Android, provided you install the correct drivers as per our Installation Guide. However, the processing power in a tablet is lower than on a PC, so you may see some performance issues depending on your application and the required software.

Fantastic little radio, got a second

Got two of these connected to a Raspberry Pi, one for ACARS and the other for ADS-B. Been operating solidly 24/7 since purchase. Really easy to get up and running too. Plugged in directly they operate too hot to touch but on a USB extension or 90 degree adaptor as I’m using, they’re not so bad but still run really hot. To be fair, even a standard USB memory stick runs really hot in a RPi.

Excellent little device

Previously purchased an NESDR SMArt which has served me well but needed an RTL-SDR with a bias tee to power an active L-Band patch antenna for receiving Inmarsat Std-C data and the NESDR SMArTee fits the bill. Driver installation was not necessary in my case but it is easy enough to do with the Zadig application and instructions on the NooElec website.

A great performer, the best value opton for Sawbird io LNA/ Jaero experimentation

Bias tee always on by default, no messing with software switching. Great little radio for experimenting with Satcoms especially when teamed up with a sawbird io and running Jaero decoding program, as mentioned in my blog pages. Thanks John and the team at Nooelec, great product, brilliant value for money.

VERY capable 2Mhz SDR receiver!

This is a FANTASTIC entry point into the world of SDR receivers. This version offers the same functionality as the NESDR v4 but with added BiasT power on the SMA port. NooElec also do the Lana wideband RF amplifier, which to be honest adds a load of gain but offers no benefit if used right before the input of the SDR. I suspect it needs to be used like a masthead preamp next to an antenna to amplify signals down a long coax run. The Flamingo FM+ is excellent however and offers good attenuation of broadcast FM stations. This SDR provides great stability and capability when using SDR#. And yes it can be used to pick up ADS-B if you want to feed flightradar24 etc.... 2Mhz of bandwidth is very usable, more is great but you have to pay for it. This is the perfect first step into SDR. Highly recommend!
