Grind in a coffee grinder. Place in a glass jar. Fill with vodka. Stick it your cupboard for a month or two. Strain with cheese cloth or stainless screen. Result will be as good or better than the expensive gentian root extract sold by Herb Pharm.

One package of Gentain root, cut and sifted to 750 mL of vodka steeped for several weeks makes great digestive bitters.

OK, quest for quick, simple home made bitterant for my G&Ts enjoyed a major leap forward with the strong tea made from this root. It is so bitter you can taste it from the vapors. Bitter all over the tongue not just the back. Intense. Long lasting. No other discernible flavors until greatly diluted then primarily a hint of barkiness. Far too bitter to drink straight without greatly diluting it and even then still not pleasant tho as alluded additional flavor components do assume a background gustatory and olfactory presence. A little in a shot of gin with a generous measure of soda produced a strongly bittered G&T which is my goal. Will require a strong gin to punch through the bitterness. Will next try adding some juniper berries as a flavorful mollifying additive that should help to provide an emergent boost for the gin . As salt can counter bitterness somewhat may try the tiniest amount plus experiment with sugar and citric acid as together they should involve the entire classical taste map of the tongue. Lastly, will be interesting to bring in the umami region with a pinch of MSG! Yes, as I had hoped this is an enjoyable challenge. Yea rah malaria!
