I have had this holder since 2020, and I have tried dispensing paper towels from both directions: towels in back/towels in front. It does make a difference as to how the towels will tear. If you dispense [pull] from the back, you are very likely to pull multiple sheets at once. But if you dispense from the front, the tension bar will hold the roll tightly and you can control the amount of towels you need. If you doubt this, then why not give it a try? It works for me 100% by having the tension bar put pressure on the paper roll in the front of the roll. Also, one might want to hold the top knob for control; I have found it best [if you must use two hands] to hold the tension bar between index finger and thumb and grab with your other hand the top of the paper sheet you wish to tear, and then snap your wrist. This gives extraordinary control in tearing. However, this holder also works well one-handed to just grab the sheet at the top edge and tear with a snapping wrist, when the paper dispenses from the front.Also, some complain about the height of the dispenser being too short. That may be true of some brands but not Bounty, Brawny, Viva, Sparkle and Scott. All of these brands fit the height requirement. The brand in my review is Bounty Select-a-Size.

This paper towel holder has enough weight to stay stable on the counter. The arm on the side holds the towel in place for easy detachment. I purchased this one to replace the one I had. I purchased the same thing because I had such good luck with the first one that was used every day for years and finally let go. I would recommend this product.

But if you value efficiency, good design, and a little less kitchen frustration, this is worth the price.

The best! I had my first one 10 years. When it broke I tried another and it broke in 1 month. Back to this sturdy one and it is all I will ever buy!
