Fin-tastic (somebody had to!)
Finspan is a beautiful & charming game, with a colourful table presence. If you’ve played either Wingspan or Wyrmspan, a lot of the mechanisms will be familiar but it’s still different enough to provide a unique playing experience. If you haven’t played Wingspan or Wyrmspan, then you’re in the right place - Finspan has fewer mechanisms than these games, so is the easiest to learn out of the three & just as fun.I have a couple of friends who are reluctant to try it, because ‘if I like Wingspan, why would I want this?’ I'm also a big fan of Wingspan & now I prefer Finspan. Maybe I just like fish more than birds? I’ve certainly found myself browsing the cards between turns, admiring the artwork & reading the ‘fishy facts’. With Wingspan, there was so much going on that I spent all this time planning my next moves. Yet despite having fewer elements to think about, Finspan is still a very strategic game which requires as much brain-power as its avian equivalent.Players will mostly be building up their own ocean board - placing fish cards & encouraging those fish to lay eggs. Getting those eggs to hatch & then moving the resulting young around the board to form shoals will score even more points. Wingspan doesn't have much in the way of player interaction & Finspan has even less, as there's no shared food dice, so no crossing your fingers hoping that nan doesn't grab all the worms before it's your turn.Finspan is cheaper than the others 'spans', due to it's fish egg tokens being flat cardboard instead of the charming plastic eggs used in the others. While not really necessary, an expansion containing thicker fish tokens & squidgy-looking 3-D fish eggs is available separately. It no doubt lowers the environmental impact too.I highly recommend Finspan - while it has fewer different elements than the other two games, it's still just as much of a challenge, so I didn’t feel like I’d missed out in any way. And I just adore the fish cards. And if you fancy a fishy fix when nobody else is around, it has a solo mode, which is great for me.
