excellent general view of some important areas of basic and modern mathematics
This book is addressed to the general reader interested in the conceptual side of mathematics, that is often slighted in coursework or in textbooks. The author addresses a relatively limited number of areas of interest in mathematics, focusing on its overall unity, and some of the areas of interest that were historically important as well as some relatively modern developments n the years 1950-1990. In this sense, the book is somewhat dated, but the superb presentation of topics such as Fermat's last theorem or the Poincare conjecture, gives real insight into mathematically thinking and a fine context for appreciating math, while avoiding jargon, and excessive mathematical notation. It is a "big picture" account, and yet not superficial, as Prof. Devlin does supply some very nice, relatively intuitive proofs, and quite insightful discussions, such as with Fermat's last theorem. I believe that acquiring a taste and an interest in modern mathematics, with its heavy orientation toward abstraction, is overall a fairly arduous process, but I do think that this book helps us to take a step or two in a positive direction. I think that for students curious about math, a book like this provides needed perspective that I do not see is necessarily going to be supplied in formal coursework. There are many factors that work to evolve our ability to appreciate modern math, but I do think, that with respect to a general audience, Prof. Devlin's book is one of the best resources I have seen. I very highly recommend this book to people who want to develop insight into the "science of patterns".

I've always hated math. I could get by when i memorized formulas for tests, but I never understood it.I began a math class on college with an amazing teacher who focused on why we use formulas and what the concepts actually mean. He also helps me understand things more deeply that i thought i had understood. That teacher recommended books by Jo Boaler. ( which are also fantastic). Her books reference this book by Keith Delvin. Now I'm hooked. His book discusses a wide range of topics and includes historical backgrounds. It brings math to life. I have no idea of someone with a strong background in math would appreciate this book, but for someone like me, who hated even the word, this book ( along with my teacher and Boaler) habe changed many life. Math is now many favorite subject. If you want to think about math differently and get an understanding of what math really is, this is the book for you. Its well written, too. Not boring at all. Also, i got the hardback edition, and its a really nice copy.

Patterns
A bit dry ,b ut makes the case that mathematics is the science of patterns.

I loved this book
I loved this book! Very readable. A great introduction to a number of areas of math, some of which I knew almost nothing about. Right now, I'm studying calculus using KhanAcademy.org video lessons. This book gave me a much firmer grounding in the basic concepts of calculus. It provided missing context. I didn't understand some of the math which Devlin presents; but the real point of the book is to give an overall understanding of each of several fields of math, even if some of the specific math techniques escape the reader. Lovely book and very worthwhile reading!

This is a great book and I ordered extra copies for some children in my life. It's not a child's book, but it's written in a light and non-intimidating style that it's appropriate for anyone who wants to know more about math. It certainly leaves out many topics, but the breadth is extensive and suitable.

Excellent explanation of mathematical concepts from the past to the present
Mr. Devlin has given some of the clearest explanation of many mathematical concepts and how the fit into the continually improving of mathematical patterns to everyday concepts and problems. His explanation of the calculus was one of the best I have read.
