I have no means to test chromium content of this metal, but by 2 factors, I would venture to say that they ARE stainless steel. 1. They have been in my shop thru summer rain and heat, it is now February the 1st and there are still no visible signs of rust which would certainly be present on carbon steel materials under these storage conditions. 2. By all appearances (visually) they are comparable to any other stainless steel items I have used throughout my 45 years of woodworking. I would admit that, also visually, they may have a lower chromium content in their alloy than a comparably sized more expensive set, but they do the job I purchased them for at price much less than is really needed for my processes. Certainly, a $500 set would be nice, but then I'd have to jack my prices up, or sell 10 times more product to compensate, when these work just fine.

It's nice to know how long they are, and if I measured the pic..., but the maximum measurement is a more useful number. How wide does each get?

When it comes to calipers, digital or manual the number ie; 8", 6" etc. represents the opening of the caliper. This set of calipers all open little more than.

can you lock in the measurement with these?

That is what the nut on the screw is for. It doesn't really lock, if you were to rub the nut on something it could move, and it can spring inward it you push into a hole.

If these are stainless steel like advertised then why are they coated in oil put in a plastic sealed bag and shipped 1/2 way around the world?

Sir,as you advert so many products, I must note that you use statements "loosly" and/or "totally incorrect". Here, eg : 1) you cannot CANNOT use any magnet to learn if a material is 'stainless steel' !! SOME stainless IS, and Some is NOT!' .. Also: it'd be better were you to describe them as 'MOSTLY stainless !! (there is no reason why the mfgr doesn't use STAINLESS SPRINGS !! 2) Your descr of "Super Accurate Digital Calipers" is wrong! 'SUPER ACCURACY IS NOT OBTAINED BY A DEVICE USING ONLY 2 DIGITS! 3) Your description of those digital calipers set of 3 : Where you ID which is for INSIDE measurements, which for EXTERNAL ones, is totally REVERSED !! In your pic, the CENTER unit of the three is for INTERNAL measurments Personally, I think you're in the wrong business: Try selling cars! J.A. MechEngr, M.D.
